TL;DR

Privy is email, SMS, and popups for small and mid Shopify stores. 15-day trial, no card. No permanent free plan. Email starts at $30 a month for 0-1,500 mailable contacts, unlimited sends, and 250 SMS credits included. Displays-only starts at $24 a month for 10,000 pageviews. SMS add-on starts at $15 a month for 1,250 credits; unused SMS credits roll over. Email price climbs with mailable contacts (for example $165 at 9,001-10,000). Partner 15% off for 12 months. Closest alternatives: Klaviyo, Attentive, Omnisend, and Shopify Email.

Best forShopify email + popups

Privy is the Shopify marketing stack you buy when Klaviyo feels like a second job and Shopify Email feels like a stub. Popups to capture the address, email to work it, SMS if you want the text, displays if you only needed the on-site layer. One vendor, three bills that can stack.

This review is for merchants past their first sales who are staring at a Klaviyo quote and a pile of popup apps. Prices are from privy.com/pricing as of September 2026. I disclose a partner offer: 15% off for 12 months at https://go.privy.com/louis-dupple-com.

I am not claiming we ran a 90-day deliverability test on your domain. I am walking through how contacts, pageviews, and SMS credits are billed, and when Klaviyo, Attentive, Omnisend, or Shopify Email is the cleaner stack.

Popup apps have a reputation for wrecking mobile conversion. Privy is still a script on the storefront. The pricing page will not tell you what it does to LCP. Measure before and after, the same way you would for Judge.me or any spin-to-win toy.

If the capture unit costs you more checkout than it earns in emails, you bought the wrong layer.

What is Privy?

Privy is an ecommerce capture and messaging platform (Boston; the company has been around since 2014) aimed at Shopify, with BigCommerce and Wix in the mix. The product is three pieces that share a contact list.

Email is campaigns and automations (welcome, cart, post-purchase) with unlimited sends, billed on mailable contacts. SMS is an add-on billed on credits; US and Canada are live, UK and Australia listed as coming.

Displays are the popups, embeds, landing pages, spin-to-win, cart savers, quizzes, and exit-intent units, billed on pageviews if you buy them alone.

Email and SMS plans include Displays. That matters: if you already pay for email, you do not also need the $24 displays SKU. Displays-only is for merchants who want the popup layer and will keep sending from Klaviyo, Omnisend, or Shopify Email.

Collected contacts can sync to Shopify and to Klaviyo, which is the honest "we are the capture layer" setup.

There is no forever-free email plan. The 15-day trial is the look around. After that you are on a contact tier or a pageview tier.

Privy is not Klaviyo with a friendlier logo. Flows, predictive analytics, and the event graph are thinner. That is fine at 800 contacts and painful at 80,000. The product you are buying at $30 is list plus popup plus a few automations, not a lifecycle org. Keep that in your head when a sales email says you can replace the whole stack.

How Privy works

Install the Shopify app. Privy injects on-site units (popup, embed, cart saver) and starts a list. Email automations fire off Shopify events: browse, cart, checkout, order. You pay for mailable contacts, not raw profiles, and sends are unlimited on the email SKU. That is the opposite of tools that meter both list size and send volume.

SMS is a second slider. Email includes 250 SMS credits. The first paid SMS add-on is $15 for 1,250 credits (about $0.012 per US credit). Unused SMS credits roll to the next period. A US SMS is 1 credit per segment; MMS is 3. Longer texts eat more segments.

Canada matches US rates. If you text a lot, model credits before you celebrate "SMS from $15."

Displays-only is pageviews: $24 up to 10k, $48 up to 25k, $84 up to 50k, then $168 / $300 / $420 / $600 as you climb toward a million. A/B tests, templates, and the usual CRO toys are on that SKU. Theme scripts are the tax. Measure your storefront before and after, the same as any popup app.

Support is email and live chat on the combined plans. Integrations cover the usual ecommerce stack. None of this replaces a deliverability program. You still need a domain, a list you actually clean, and a reason to send.

Mailable versus raw contacts is the lever. If you never suppress bounce and unsubscribe, you pay to email people who cannot receive mail. Shopify's customer list will happily sync the dead weight. A quarterly cleanup is cheaper than the next contact tier.

Same for SMS: a three-segment US text is three credits, so a short campaign with a long legal footer is not $15 forever.

Privy key features

Unlimited email sendsEssential
You pay for mailable contacts, not for each campaign. That is the right meter if you send a lot to a small list, and the wrong one if you hoard dead addresses.
On-site displays and popupsEssential
Exit intent, spin-to-win, quizzes, cart savers, embeds, landing pages. Included with email/SMS, or $24 and up on pageviews if you only want the capture layer.
SMS credits with rollover
250 credits in the email plan, then add-ons from $15 / 1,250. Unused credits roll over, which is kinder than use-it-or-lose-it SMS buckets.
Ecommerce automations
Welcome, abandoned cart, post-purchase, and segmentation on Shopify data. Enough to run a store. Not Klaviyo's event graph.
Klaviyo sync on displays-only
You can keep Klaviyo as the ESP and use Privy as the popup. That is a valid architecture if you already like Klaviyo's flows.
No annual contract on the public card
Privy sells month-to-month on the pricing page. The partner 15% is a 12-month discount on that bill, not a locked enterprise MSA.

Privy pricing

Privy publishes a contact table, a pageview table, and an SMS table on privy.com/pricing (September 2026, USD). 15-day trial, no credit card. No permanent free plan.

Email starts at $30 a month for 0-1,500 mailable contacts, unlimited sends, and 250 SMS credits. Then $45 (1,501-2,000), $60 (2,001-3,000), $75, $90, and so on, hitting $165 at 9,001-10,000 and $840 at 95,001-100,000. Past 250,000 contacts is custom. You only pay for mailable contacts.

Displays-only starts at $24 a month for up to 10,000 pageviews, then $48 / $84 / $168 / $300 / $420 / $600 as pageviews go from 25k to 1 million. This SKU includes templates, landing pages, embeds, A/B tests, and the popup set. Contacts can sync to Shopify or Klaviyo.

SMS add-on starts at $15 a month for 1,250 credits (on top of the 250 that come with email). Then $25 / 2,500, $35 / 3,750, $45 / 5,000, and up. Unused SMS credits roll over. US and Canada: 1 credit per SMS segment, 3 per MMS.

A store on email at $30 plus SMS at $15 is $45 before tax. Displays are already included in that email plan. Partner offer: 15% off for 12 months at https://go.privy.com/louis-dupple-com.

A 4,000-contact store on email is $75 a month on the published table, unlimited sends, displays included, 250 SMS credits. Add the $15 SMS tier and you are at $90 before the 15% partner cut. Klaviyo at that profile count is often higher; Omnisend Standard is often lower but caps sends at 12 times the list.

Shopify Email is still the cheapest if you only blast a weekly note. Pick the meter that matches how you send, not the logo you saw in a podcast.

Privy pros and cons

What we like

  • Unlimited email sends on a contact tier, with displays included.
  • SMS credits roll over, and the $15 add-on is a clear first step.
  • Displays-only at $24 lets you keep another ESP.

What could be better

  • No permanent free plan after the 15-day trial.
  • Lighter automation and analytics than Klaviyo.
  • SMS is US/Canada first; UK and Australia were still listed as coming.

Who Privy is for

Privy is a strong fit for small and growing Shopify stores that want capture plus email without a Klaviyo-sized project.

$30 for the first 1,500 mailable contacts is the number I would put next to Omnisend Standard and Klaviyo's first paid bucket. Displays-only at $24 is the right buy if your ESP is already decided and you just need a less ugly popup. Take 15% for a year if you were going to pay anyway.

It is a weaker fit if you are already a Klaviyo shop with serious flows (stay, and maybe keep Privy only as displays). It is the wrong tool if SMS is the product (Attentive is the enterprise text stack) or if you only needed Shopify's native email and a theme popup.

There is no free forever plan, so a hobby shop that sends 200 emails a month may be happier on Shopify Email or Omnisend Free until the list is real. Clean the list. Privy bills mailable contacts, and dead addresses are how a $30 plan becomes a $90 plan.

WooCommerce and generic we-sell-online shops should check whether Privy still treats them as first-class. The pricing and feature story I am writing is Shopify-shaped. BigCommerce and Wix are listed; the app store reviews for those platforms are your problem to read.

If you are on a custom stack with no Shopify customer events, you will rebuild half the automations by hand.

The bottom line

Privy is the Shopify-shaped middle: popups included, unlimited email sends, SMS as an add-on, $30 to start, $24 if you only want displays. The 15-day trial needs no card. 15% off for 12 months on the partner link is the only discount I would count on. Clean your mailable list or the contact table will punish you.

Leave it on the table when the job is bigger or smaller. Klaviyo if flows and event data are the business. Attentive if SMS is the business. Omnisend if you want a free tier and a $16 Standard seat. Shopify Email if you are not ready for a third-party ESP.

Privy wins the store that needs capture plus email this month and does not want a Klaviyo implementation on the calendar.

Install the trial. Ship one welcome flow and one cart popup. If you cannot point at a captured list or a recovered cart in 15 days, uninstall. If you can, pay $30 (or $24 displays-only) and take the 12-month 15%. Revisit Klaviyo when flows, not popups, are the job you are actually doing every week.
