Cheaper Shopify Alternatives (2026): Store Cost at $10k a Month in Sales
Cheaper Shopify alternatives for 2026, priced at $10,000 a month in sales and 300 orders: real plan and processing costs, not just the sticker price.
For a store doing $10,000 a month in sales across 300 orders, Hostinger's Premium plan is the cheapest platform in this set at $4,704 in year one, verified on vendor pricing pages in September 2026, but only if you can prepay four years upfront. Without a prepay, Big Cartel is the cheapest at $4,740 a year. Shopify Basic itself lands at $4,908, and Wix, Squarespace, and Ecwid all land within a few dollars of that same figure once card processing is counted in.
That closeness is the real finding here. Below the sticker price, four platforms converge on almost the same total because a 2.9% card-processing rate, not the monthly plan fee, does most of the damage at this volume. The gaps that matter show up elsewhere: in a platform whose free tier is genuinely free, and in two platforms whose cheap entry price hides a forced jump to a pricier tier once sales pass a cap.
The math, shown once
The scenario: $10k a month in online sales (that is $120,000 a year), 300 orders a month (3,600 a year). Every total below is plan fee plus online card processing at that volume, using each vendor's own published rate, read on its pricing page this week.
A platform charging Stripe's standard US rate of 2.9% + 30 cents per transaction costs $120,000 x 0.029 = $3,480 in percentage fees, plus 3,600 x $0.30 = $1,080 in per-order fees, for $4,560 a year in processing alone before a cent of plan fee is added. That single number is why Shopify, Wix, Squarespace, and Ecwid all land close to $4,908: each charges close to that same rate and a similar entry-level plan fee.
Cost at the scenario, cheapest first
| Platform | Entry price | Cost at scenario | Free plan (limits) | Billing basis | Hidden costs |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hostinger Premium | $2.99/mo intro | $4,704/yr | None; ecommerce caps at 1,000 products | 48 months prepaid, then monthly | Renews at $10.99/mo, more than 3.5x the intro rate, once the 4-year term ends |
| Big Cartel Platinum | $15/mo | $4,740/yr | Gold plan is free but limited; no cap published | Monthly; no annual price published | Payment processing runs through Stripe at 2.9% + 30 cents; Big Cartel charges no store transaction fee of its own |
| WooCommerce (self-hosted) | $0 (plugin) | from $4,860/yr | Plugin is free forever; no store included | Hosting billed separately, WooPayments per order | Hosting alone runs $25 to $350 a month on WooCommerce's own pricing page |
| Shopify Basic | $29/mo | $4,908/yr | None; 3-day free trial | Monthly or annual | 2% surcharge on Basic if you use any processor other than Shopify Payments |
| Wix eCommerce Core | $29/mo billed annually | $4,908/yr | Free site plan has no online store | Annual | None published beyond Wix Payments' own 2.9% + 30 cent rate |
| Squarespace Core | $19/mo billed annually (Basic) | $4,908/yr | None; 14-day trial | Annual or monthly | Basic's 2% store fee costs $2,400 a year at this volume, twenty times what its lower sticker saves |
| Ecwid Venture | $5/mo (Starter, 10 products) | $4,908/yr | None; Starter caps out at 10 products | Annual or monthly | Starter's 10-product ceiling makes it unusable at this order volume |
| Square Online Free | $0/mo | $5,040/yr | Free forever, no cap on the plan itself | Monthly, no contract | Free plan's 3.3% + 30 cent online rate costs more than Plus's $49/mo plus 2.9% |
| Sellfy Premium | $22/mo (Starter, annual) | $5,988/yr | None; Starter caps sales at $833/mo | Annual or monthly | Starter and Business sales caps ($833/mo and $50k a year) are both blown past at this scenario |
| BigCommerce Scale | $29/mo billed annually (Core) | $8,868/yr | None; 15-day trial | Annual or monthly | Core and Growth GMV caps ($30k and $100k trailing 12 months) force the jump to Scale |
Toolradar data: Toolradar, the software directory we run, evaluated 104 ecommerce platforms for its best ecommerce platforms ranking, updated September 2026. In our own scenario table above, the gap between the cheapest and priciest platform is $4,164 a year, on identical sales, entirely from plan tier and processing rate rather than features.
Where the ranking flips
This ranking holds only at $10k a month in sales. BigCommerce looks expensive here only because its Core plan caps gross merchandise value at $30,000 trailing twelve months and Growth caps it at $100,000, both below this store's annual revenue, forcing the jump to the $299-a-month Scale plan. A store doing $2,000 a month ($24,000 a year) stays under the Core cap and pays that tier's low annual rate instead, close to Shopify's own price. Sellfy flips the same way: its Starter tier is fine under $833 a month in sales, and Business covers up to roughly $4,167 a month, but this scenario needs Premium at $119 a month.
Hidden costs, with the figure behind each
- BigCommerce's revenue cap. Core stops at $30,000 in trailing-12-month sales, Growth at $100,000. Crossing either mid-year forces an upgrade to Scale at $299 a month, a $270-a-month jump from Core.
- Sellfy's sales cap. Starter is capped at $833 a month in sales, Business at $50,000 a year. This store's annual revenue needs Premium, at $119 a month instead of $22.
- Squarespace's Basic transaction fee. Basic charges 2% on every online-store sale; Core and above charge 0%. On $120,000 a year that fee is $2,400, against a $120-a-year saving on the lower plan.
- Hostinger's renewal jump. The $2.99-a-month intro rate needs a 48-month, $143.52 upfront payment. It renews at $10.99 a month, more than 3.5 times higher, once that term ends.
- Shopify's non-Shopify-Payments surcharge. Basic adds 2% on top of whatever a third-party processor charges if you skip Shopify Payments; Advanced and Plus cut that to 0.6% and 0.2%.
- WooCommerce's hosting spread. The plugin costs nothing, but WooCommerce's own pricing page puts managed hosting at $25 to $350 a month, a swing of nearly $4,000 a year that has nothing to do with the software itself.
- Ecwid's product cap on the cheap tier. Starter is $5 a month but stops at 10 products, unworkable for a store moving 300 orders a month; Venture removes the limit up to 100 products at $29 a month billed annually.
Who actually comes out ahead
Shopify's closest rivals on pure cost are Wix, Squarespace, and Ecwid, all within a couple of dollars of Shopify's own total once card processing is included, so picking between them comes down to which admin and app ecosystem fits the operation, not price. Our Shopify review and the wider best ecommerce platforms ranking cover that fit question in depth.
Square Online's free plan is the one genuine no-monthly-fee option that still lands under Shopify's total, because the extra 0.4 points on its processing rate ($480 a year at this volume) costs less than Plus's $588-a-year plan fee. That only holds below roughly $147,000 a year in sales, the point where Plus's lower rate starts paying for itself.
WooCommerce and Big Cartel are the two platforms where the software itself is cheap and the real bill sits elsewhere: hosting for WooCommerce, and, for Big Cartel, the lack of a feature-complete free tier at this order volume. Neither publishes a hard product cap the way Ecwid or Sellfy do, which suits a catalog that keeps growing, but neither gives you Shopify's app marketplace either. Sellfy and BigCommerce are the two platforms this scenario penalizes hardest, both because their cheapest advertised price assumes a sales volume this store has already outgrown.
Whichever platform wins on cost, the shipping, inventory, and returns stack around it still has to be built. Our best shipping software, inventory management software, and order management systems rankings cover the pieces a store this size adds once the storefront is picked. A store still deciding what to sell before where to sell it can start with best dropshipping suppliers or best print-on-demand services; our Printful vs. Printify comparison covers the fulfillment side of that margin math. A brand running its own POS alongside the online store should check best POS systems, and one still setting retail prices belongs with AI for retail pricing. Once checkout is live, how to reduce cart abandonment is the next lever worth pulling.
Methodology
We priced ten platforms at a fixed scenario: $120,000 a year in online sales across 300 orders a month, using each vendor's own pricing page and, where the vendor doesn't run its own payment processor, that processor's own published rate (Stripe, Wix Payments, Squarespace Payments). All prices were read in USD on the vendor's own pricing page on 28 September 2026 and are current as of that date; plan fees and product caps change, so re-check before committing to an annual term.
FAQ
What is the cheapest Shopify alternative for a $10k-a-month store?
Hostinger's Premium plan is the cheapest at $4,704 in the first year, but it requires paying $143.52 upfront for a 48-month term and then renews at $10.99 a month. Without a multi-year prepay, Big Cartel is cheapest at $4,740 a year, with Shopify, Wix, Squarespace, and Ecwid all landing near $4,908.
Is there a free Shopify alternative that can handle this sales volume?
Square Online's Free plan has no monthly fee and no published sales cap, so yes: at this scenario it costs $5,040 a year in payment processing alone, using its 3.3% + 30 cent online rate. That beats Square's own $49-a-month Plus plan below roughly $147,000 in annual sales.
Why is BigCommerce more expensive than Shopify in this comparison?
BigCommerce's entry-level Core plan advertises a low monthly rate billed annually, but it caps gross merchandise value at $30,000 in trailing twelve months, and the next tier, Growth, caps out at $100,000. A store clearing $120,000 a year needs the $299-a-month Scale plan instead, which pushes BigCommerce's real cost to $8,868 a year.
Does WooCommerce actually cost less than Shopify?
The WooCommerce plugin is free, but it needs its own hosting, which WooCommerce's own pricing page prices at $25 to $350 a month depending on the host. At the low end of that range, WooCommerce lands under Shopify's total; at the high end, it costs almost double.
Is Wix or Squarespace cheaper than Shopify for a store this size?
Both land within a couple of dollars of Shopify's own total once payment processing is included, because all three charge close to a 2.9% + 30 cent rate on top of a similarly priced entry plan. The real difference between them is the app ecosystem and design tools, not the annual bill.
What does Shopify charge if I don't use Shopify Payments?
Basic adds a 2% surcharge on top of whatever a third-party processor charges. Grow cuts that to 1%, Advanced to 0.6%, and Plus to 0.2%, so the penalty for using an outside processor shrinks as the plan tier rises.
Which platform is the worst fit at this sales volume?
Sellfy and BigCommerce, for the same underlying reason: both size their cheapest advertised tier to a sales volume well under this store's annual revenue, so it gets forced into a pricier plan on both, at $119 a month and $299 a month respectively.
