Gelato Review 2026

What the free plan includes, what Gelato+ changes on the bill, and which print networks to price against it.

TL;DR

Gelato is worth the free plan when the same design has to be made near buyers in more than one country. Gelato+ costs $29.99 a month, or $19.99 a month billed yearly, and that is the only paid plan with a public price. The free plan covers 2 stores, 2 users, and local production in 32 countries, with no product discount and no commission.

The product discount is capped at 33 percent, and it skips shipping, the 14-day trial, and orders delivered outside Gelato's country list. A shop that ships elsewhere pays the seat and gets no break on the blank. A single-country shirt shop should price Printify first, and the product write-up is on Dupple's Gelato review.

  • Updated: October 17, 2026
  • Best for: Multi-country stores that can use the product discount in Gelato's listed markets
  • Price as of October 17, 2026: Free plan; Gelato+ is $29.99/mo or $19.99/mo billed yearly.
  • A local-production print network with a free plan and one paid seat, Gelato+.
  • Gelato launched: August 2012, after Optimalprint in 2007.
  • Free plan: The free plan caps stores and users, and it includes no product discount.
  • Gelato+ trial: The trial lasts 14 days, and billing details are required up front.
  • Product discount: There is no product discount on the free plan, and the paid plan caps it.

Pros

  • Local production is on the free plan, so a multi-country catalog does not have to pay the seat.
  • No commission and no order minimum, so a quiet month costs only the products you actually sold.
  • Yearly Gelato+ costs less than twelve monthly bills, and the paid plan adds a product discount of up to 33%.

Cons

  • The free plan caps stores and users, so a small team outgrows it before order volume does.
  • Canceling Gelato+ uninstalls its apps, and orders that need those apps stop until you resubscribe.
  • The plan page shows no product price, so you cannot audit the discount in cash before you join.

Gelato's pitch to a store owner is local production without a warehouse, which suits a catalog sold into several countries. Subscription prices are public and the shirt price is not, so the discount is a percent of a number you see only inside the catalog.

Toolradar data: Toolradar tracks 11 print-on-demand tools as of 16 October 2026. Among those with at least 500 reviews, Printify is the highest rated, at 4.6 out of 5 from 7,640 reviews.

The category table is on the print-on-demand statistics page, with profiles for Printify, Printful, and Gooten.

Methodology: prices below were read on 17 October 2026 from each vendor's own plan or help page, and the links sit in the pricing section. Our break-even math is labeled as ours, and this is a read of those pages, not a print test.

How Retailpresso handles affiliate links is on how we rate.

What is Gelato?

Gelato is a print-on-demand network that sends each paid order to a production partner near the buyer, so you place a design without buying blanks first.

The Gelato brand launched in August 2012, after Optimalprint in 2007, and the plan pages describe local production in 32 countries through more than 250 facilities. That reach is what a multi-country catalog is buying, because the blank is made nearer the buyer.

The catalog runs from apparel to wall art, mugs, cards, and stationery, so one account can cover a shirt line and a gift line.

Gelato does not take a commission, so the retail price stays yours and you pay Gelato for the product and the shipping. Gelato publishes a 4.8 out of 5 score from 963 reviews on its Gelato+ page, and that score is the vendor's own claim, not a Retailpresso rating.

The wider set of printers is in the print-on-demand services guide.

How Gelato works

Setup is an account, a sales channel, and a design, and the plan table names Shopify, Etsy, an API, and Order Desk, while the Gelato+ page also names Amazon and TikTok. A third storefront or a third login on the free plan is a plan change, so extra shops and people raise the bill before volume does.

The customer pays the price you set, then you pay Gelato for production and delivery. Gelato says the typical window in the US, the UK, and the EU is 2 to 5 days, which is the turnaround a multi-country shop is buying. There is no order minimum, so a quiet week adds no volume penalty on top of the seat.

Gelato+ starts with a 14-day trial that asks for billing details and does not charge while it runs. Product discounts stay off until the paid plan is active, so the trial shows the software rather than a cheaper blank.

Gelato says the control labeled Activate now to apply discounts skips the trial and charges the card, so that button is a purchase. Live shipping rates inside Shopify require Advanced Shopify or Shopify Plus, which is Shopify's rule rather than a Gelato fee.

Gelato key features

Local production in 32 countriesEssential
Every plan, including the free one, routes the order to a partner in a local network of more than 250 facilities, which is what a multi-country catalog buys before any seat fee. Gelato says many of those orders arrive in 2 to 5 days in the US, the UK, and the EU.
No commission on the saleEssential
Gelato does not take a cut of your retail price and sets no order minimum, so a quiet month costs only the blanks you sold. The monthly fee appears only if you move to Gelato+ or ask sales for Platinum.
Gelato+ product discountEssential
The paid plan's product discount is off on the free plan, off during the trial, and off on shipping, and orders outside the listed markets do not get it. A shop shipping elsewhere pays for software, not a cheaper blank, and Gelato says the offer can be specific to the account.
Personalization Studio and mockups
Personalization Studio builds print files from buyer text and photos, and Gelato says it requires Gelato+, so names and photos are a reason to pay while volume is still small. Full access to the 800-plus premium mockups is listed for Gelato+ and Platinum, while the free plan still includes the standard mockups.
Store and user caps
Shopify, Etsy, the API, and Order Desk are on the plan table, and the Gelato+ page adds Amazon and TikTok. Unlimited stores and users start on Gelato+, so a growing team pays for headcount even when order volume is still small.
Packaging add-ons and cancellation
Branded inserts and labels start at $0.49 each, so custom packaging is a per-order cost on top of the seat. Canceling uninstalls the Gelato+ apps, and orders that need those apps are not produced until you subscribe again.

Gelato pricing

Prices checked on 17 October 2026 on Gelato's subscription plans, which list three columns. Free is $0 on monthly or annual billing, so the network is not locked behind a seat.

Gelato+ is the monthly public rate or the lower yearly rate, and Platinum is custom pricing.

Gelato's subscription cost article prices the yearly plan at $239.88, charged at the start. Customers in the United States have local tax added on top of that subscription, so a US billing address pays more than the headline.

Our arithmetic, not Gelato's: twelve monthly bills are $359.88, so the yearly charge saves $120, which is also the gap Gelato states on the plan page. At the full product discount, the monthly seat is covered by $90.88 of pre-discount product in a month.

The yearly seat is covered by $726.91 of pre-discount product in a year, about $60.58 a month. A smaller discount needs more product spend, and shipping does not count toward that cover, so a postage-heavy catalog will not earn the seat back on shipping.

Gelato's subscription FAQ says shipping discounts are not part of the plan, even though the plan page is currently advertising 30 days of free standard shipping with Gelato+. Treat that offer as a campaign on the page today, not a benefit that renews.

Eligible delivery countries, from Gelato's country article, are the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, France, Sweden, Spain, Australia, Norway, and Denmark.

Anywhere else the product discount does not apply, so a store shipping outside that list pays for software and mockups rather than a cheaper blank. Gelato also says the offer is personal to the account, so a promo can be narrower than that list.

A 5-person team cannot stay on the free plan, which stops at 2 users. Gelato+ is one subscription with unlimited users, so a 20-person team pays the same seat as a team of three.

The plan page does not name a shirt, a poster, or a mug, so check the current product price in Gelato's catalog before you treat the percent as cash. Printify's pricing page shows an $8.77 fulfillment example and prices Premium from $39 a month, with a yearly option.

Printful's pricing page keeps the account free and prices Growth as a monthly plan.

The Growth article matches that monthly fee, waives it for a year after the sales threshold in the table, and says you cannot prepay the year, so the commitment stays monthly.

Gooten and Spreadconnect charge no seat, and shirt math for one blank is in the t-shirt comparison.

Gelato pros and cons

What we like

  • Local production is on the free plan, so a multi-country catalog does not have to pay the seat.
  • No commission and no order minimum, so a quiet month costs only the products you actually sold.
  • Yearly Gelato+ costs less than twelve monthly bills, and the paid plan adds a product discount of up to 33%.

What could be better

  • The free plan caps stores and users, so a small team outgrows it before order volume does.
  • Canceling Gelato+ uninstalls its apps, and orders that need those apps stop until you resubscribe.
  • The plan page shows no product price, so you cannot audit the discount in cash before you join.

Who Gelato is for

Gelato fits a store that already ships one design to buyers in several of the discount countries. The free plan gives you the local network and no commission while you check samples and judge print quality.

Move to Gelato+ when the catalog discount on those orders clears the seat, or when you need a third user, a third store, or Personalization Studio.

Skip Gelato+ if most orders leave the listed countries, because you would be paying for software and mockups rather than a lower blank. Skip it too if you need a public shirt price before you open an account, since Printify prints a tee example on its pricing page and Gelato does not.

Printful is the better fit when you want facilities it runs and embroidery, and you can carry Growth until the sales waiver, with the head-to-head on Printful vs Printify.

Skip a monthly seat entirely if the platform fee has to be zero. Gooten bills product and shipping in dollars with no membership fee, and Spreadconnect does the same while stating a production window. Neither replaces Gelato's local production network, so you trade that country coverage for a bill that stays at product plus shipping.

The Printful review covers the in-house option in more detail, and Etsy catalog notes are in the Etsy print-on-demand guide.

The bottom line

Gelato is worth opening on the free plan if your buyers are spread across countries, and it is worth paying for only when the catalog discount clears the seat. The yearly charge is the cheaper of the two public rates, and it still fails when orders ship outside the listed countries or while you are still on the trial.

It also fails when the real discount on your blanks sits far under the published ceiling.

Printify is the page to open when you need a public tee price and a choice of providers. Printful is the one when the press has to be theirs and you can wait for the sales waiver.

Gooten and Spreadconnect are the pages to open when a monthly seat is off the table, and more printers are in Printful alternatives and the print-on-demand startup guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is Gelato worth it in 2026?

Yes, if the store needs local production in 32 countries and can live inside the free plan's store and user caps. The paid seat is worth it when the product discount on orders in the listed countries saves more than the monthly or yearly charge. It is a weak buy when those orders ship elsewhere, because the discount does not follow them, or when you need a public blank price before you create an account.

How much does Gelato cost?

The free plan has no monthly fee, and Gelato+ is $29.99 a month, or $19.99 a month billed as $239.88 at the start of the year. Platinum is custom pricing, so anything beyond those published rates is a sales conversation. You also pay the product and the shipping on every order, and Gelato adds local tax to the subscription for customers in the United States. The plan page does not list a product price, so check the current blank in Gelato's catalog before you model a margin.

Does Gelato have a free plan or a free trial?

The free plan stays free and includes local production, capped at 2 stores and 2 users, with no product discount. Gelato+ adds a 14-day trial that requires billing details, does not charge during the trial, and keeps discounts off until the paid plan is active. Gelato's help center says choosing Activate now skips the trial and charges you, so that button is a purchase.

How does Gelato compare with Printify and Printful?

Gelato's paid seat is the yearly or monthly Gelato+ price above, and the free plan already includes multi-country local production. Printify Premium starts from $39 a month, with a cheaper rate when billed yearly, and its pricing page shows a tee fulfillment example at $8.77. Printful Growth is $24.99 a month and can be waived after $12,000 in yearly sales, with that sales figure reduced by discounts, shipping, taxes, and extra fees. Printful does not offer an annual prepay, so you cannot buy the year in advance the way a Gelato+ yearly charge allows. Use Gelato for multi-country local production, Printify to compare providers, and Printful for in-house printing.

Does Gelato+ discount shipping?

Gelato's subscription FAQ says shipping discounts are not included, so the product discount is not a postage discount. The plan page, as read on 17 October 2026, advertises 30 days of free standard shipping alongside the product discount. Count that window as a current campaign, not a renewal benefit. The product discount, up to 33 percent, applies only after a shipping address is entered and only on a paid subscription, not on the trial.

Which countries get the Gelato+ product discount?

Gelato's help center lists the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, France, Sweden, Spain, Australia, Norway, and Denmark, and orders delivered anywhere else do not get the discount. Gelato also says eligibility can follow a promotional message sent to that account, so a listed country is the qualifying market, not a promise that every product is discounted.
