Printful vs Gelato 2026: Base Costs, Plans and Shipping
Printful vs Gelato in 2026: the same Bella + Canvas 3001 shirt priced on both, Gelato+ against Printful Growth, and US shipping, all read on vendor pages in October.

Key facts4 plans compared: Printful Free, Printful Growth, Gelato Free, Gelato+
- 4 plans compared: Printful Free, Printful Growth, Gelato Free, Gelato+
- Printful Free (best for: A brand that wants in-house production with no monthly fee): $0
- Printful Growth (best for: Sellers whose discount will beat the fee, or who are near $12,000 a year in sales): $24.99/month, 14-day trial
- Gelato Free (best for: Testing designs with the lowest public tee price): $0
- Gelato+ (best for: A shop that needs more stores, premium mockups and image tools): $29.99/month, or $239.88/year
Gelato is the cheaper pick for most US sellers in 2026: its Bella + Canvas 3001 tee lists at $10.69 for US production, against Printful's $11.92, and both are free to start. Choose Printful when one in-house production line, a printed add-on menu, and unlimited stores matter more than about $1.20 a shirt.
The paid plans tilt the other way on paper. Printful Growth is $24.99 a month and drops to free once yearly sales reach $12,000, while Gelato+ is $29.99 a month or $239.88 a year. All prices below are as of Oct 2026, verified on vendor pages: each company's own pricing, product, shipping, and help pages.
Toolradar data: Toolradar, the software directory we run, evaluated 11 print-on-demand tools for its October 2026 ranking, and only 4 of the 10 it lists have a free plan. Printful is one of the 10 ranked tools and Gelato is not on that list, so this page reads Gelato's costs straight from its own catalog and help center. The full list is the print-on-demand ranking.

Print on demand means the supplier prints and ships each item after your customer pays, so there is no inventory to buy and no warehouse to rent. The two companies earn their margin on that item, not on a seat, which is why the product price matters more than the plan card.
The difference is in who owns the press. Printful runs its own production. Gelato routes each order to one of 250+ production partners in 32 countries, picking the one nearest your customer. If Printful is still on your shortlist against a wider set, the Printful alternatives page covers the field, and the Printful review goes deeper on that single vendor.
How much does the same shirt cost on each?
One Bella + Canvas 3001 sent to a US address costs $15.68 on Gelato and $16.87 on Printful, both on the free plan and before tax. That is the figure to drop into a margin sheet, because the product price alone hides the shipping line every order carries.
Gelato's Bella + Canvas 3001 page prices the shirt for US production with a low per-item shipping add-on, which rewards a basket of several tees. Printful's Bella + Canvas 3001 page builds one print into its list price, and its shipping page charges $4.95 for the first shirt and $2.20 for each extra one in the US.
| One Bella + Canvas 3001, US customer | Gelato | Printful |
|---|---|---|
| Product price, free plan | $10.69 | $11.92, one print included |
| Shipping, first shirt | $4.99 | $4.95 |
| Shipping, each extra shirt in the order | $0.99 | $2.20 |
| Landed cost, one shirt | $15.68 | $16.87 |
| Landed cost, two shirts in one order | $27.36 | $30.99 |
| Holiday surcharge on US orders | None listed on the shirt page | $0.40 per order, 15 October to 17 January |
The gap on one shirt is $1.19, small enough that a single coupon code can hide it. The gap grows with the basket: two shirts in one order cost $3.63 less on Gelato, because its extra-item shipping is $1.21 below Printful's. If your average order holds two or more tees, Gelato's shipping card is worth more than its product price.
Printful's product page also runs a bulk calculator: at 25 items the same shirt drops to $10.37, 13% off. That rate is for one order of 25 pieces, such as event merch or a launch batch you ship yourself, not for a stream of single customer orders. It is still the one case on this page where the Printful shirt prices below Gelato's.
Both product prices move with size, color and print placement, so treat them as the public start for this blank. Printful's page says the price depends on technique, placement, color, size and fulfillment location. Gelato's table shows the same shirt at $12.24 for UK production and $13.41 for Canada, which matters if most buyers are outside the US.
Gelato+ vs Printful Growth: which paid plan pays back?
Printful Growth is the cheaper paid plan for a US shop with monthly billing, at $24.99 against $29.99. On an annual commitment Gelato+ wins: $239.88 for the year, where twelve months of Growth below the waiver line come to $299.88, a $60 difference.
The two plans buy different things, and that matters more than the $5 monthly gap. Printful Growth is a discount plan, so it only pays when your order volume turns its caps into real savings. The Growth perks page caps direct-to-garment at 25% off, all-over print at 33%, home and living at the same cap as DTG, and embroidery at 9%, and adds 25% off samples plus free digitization on sample orders. The Printful pricing page says Growth becomes free once yearly sales reach $12,000, which no Gelato plan offers.
Gelato+ is a tools plan with discounts attached. The Gelato+ overview lists Shutterstock access, 250 premium fonts, premium apparel and wall art mockups, background removal, a personalization studio, and up to 33% off products. The free vs paid comparison raises the store cap from 2 to 10 and users from 2 to 5.
Run the shirt math with the ceilings, because neither vendor prints the exact paid-plan price for this blank on the public page. A full 25% off Printful's list price for this shirt would save $2.98 a shirt, so Growth would pay for itself after 9 shirts a month. A full 33% off Gelato's $10.69 would save $3.53, so the monthly Gelato+ fee would need 9 shirts and the annual rate of $19.99 a month would need 6. Those are best cases, not budget lines: see the real SKU discount in your dashboard before you count on it.
What the plan cards leave out
Gelato+ product discounts do not start during the trial. Gelato's trial article says the 14-day trial is free, each account gets one, and discounts apply only after you subscribe to a paid plan. A seller who signs up to test the discount on a launch order will see full catalog prices for those two weeks.
Shipping is not discounted by Gelato+ either. The subscription FAQ says so plainly, and adds that cancelling uninstalls every app the plan enabled, which can break orders that depend on a personalization or mockup app. Plan the cancellation for a quiet week, not the middle of a holiday push.
Printful's catches are in the add-ons. The product price includes one print, and the Bella page lists an additional print at $5.95, a sleeve print at $2.49, an inside label at $0.99, and an outside label at $2.49. A two-sided shirt with a neck label adds $6.94 to the $11.92 base before shipping, which is the line a branded-merch budget usually forgets.
Printful also adds a $0.40 surcharge to every US-bound order from 15 October to 17 January. On a single-shirt order that pushes the landed cost to $17.27 and widens the gap with Gelato to $1.59 for the whole holiday season. Fold it into the retail price before Black Friday rather than eating it per order.
Where the order is printed
Printful wins on control; Gelato wins on reach. Printful's pricing page describes in-house production with a 3-step quality check on every order, and covers a manufacturing error with a free reprint or refund. It also says 86% of orders are fulfilled in the same region as the customer, and its shipping page puts production and fulfillment at 2 to 5 business days.
Gelato does not own the presses. It sends each order to the partner nearest the buyer, and its shipping page counts 250+ production partners and 60+ logistics partners. For this one shirt the product page names 13 production countries, including the United States, Canada, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand. That spread cuts transit for a buyer in Sydney or Stockholm, and it also means two orders of the same design can come off two different partners' machines.
For a Shopify brand selling a repeat-purchase tee, that is the real trade. Printful is one production standard you sample once. Gelato is a network where you sample the region you sell into most, and you check again when the volume moves to a new country. Order a sample either way, because a mockup shows neither the hand-feel of the print nor how the neck label sits.
Branding, labels and the catalog
Printful publishes the price of each branding option before you sell anything. The Bella page lists embroidery digitization at $6.50 per file, $3.95 for a text-only file, and free digitization on orders of 25 or more embroidered items. Embroidery-led brands get the clearer cost sheet at Printful, since the setup fee is written down rather than discovered at checkout.
Gelato's product page shows the front-print price and leaves extra placements to the editor. Its printing options article confirms front and back printing on most apparel, sleeve and label printing on selected products in the USA, UK, Germany, Poland, Australia, and New Zealand, and inner and outer labels that cannot be combined. Read the label cost in the editor for your exact product before you promise a branded unboxing.
Printful's pricing page counts 584 custom products. Gelato's help center describes hundreds of products, and the Gelato+ extras lean toward wall art: premium wall art mockups and branded inserts for posters. A seller whose line is framed prints first and tees second will get more out of Gelato+ than a seller of embroidered hats.
Stores, channels and the platform bill
Printful's free plan allows unlimited connected stores; Gelato's free plan stops at 2. A seller with an Etsy shop, a Shopify store and a wholesale site hits Gelato's cap on day one and has to buy Gelato+ for the store count alone, at the full monthly rate. That is a cost the shirt comparison above does not show.
Both connect to the channels ecommerce teams already run. Gelato lists Shopify, Etsy, WooCommerce, Wix, Squarespace, BigCommerce, Order Desk and a direct API. Printful says it supports 20+ ecommerce platforms and marketplaces. Gelato's live carrier rates and express shipping in the store are a Gelato+ feature and Shopify-only, while Printful offers live rates on integrations including Shopify and WooCommerce.
The store is still a separate bill on top of either print invoice. An Etsy seller should add the listing, transaction and payment fees from Etsy seller fees before setting a price, and a Shopify brand should read the Shopify review for the platform plan. Apps that change the product page are in the Shopify app roundup. The Etsy print-on-demand roundup covers which suppliers suit that marketplace best.
Who should pick which
Pick Gelato when the shirt price and the shipping card are the margin. A US seller with one or two stores, orders that often hold two or more items, and buyers spread across Europe or Australia gets the lower landed cost and the wider print map. Move to Gelato+ on the annual plan when you need the extra stores or the mockup and image tools, and not for the discount alone, since it does not run during the trial.
Pick Printful when every reorder has to match the last one, or when the line includes embroidery. In-house production, a published add-on menu, unlimited stores on the free plan, and a Growth fee that disappears at $12,000 a year are worth about $1.20 a shirt to a brand built on repeat buyers. Skip Growth until the DTG discount you see on your own SKUs beats the monthly fee.
Compare a third option before you commit. Printify runs a third model, a marketplace of print providers, and the Printful vs Printify comparison runs the same shirt through its network. The Printify review and the wider print-on-demand roundup cover the rest of the field, and the print-on-demand start-up guide works through profit per item once you have chosen.
How we compared
We read Printful's pricing, Growth perks, shipping, and Bella + Canvas 3001 pages, and Gelato's Bella + Canvas 3001 page, shipping page, and five help center articles on Gelato+ cost, features, trial and subscription rules, in October 2026. Landed costs add each vendor's published US product price to its published US shipping rate for the same blank, before tax. Discount break-evens use the stated maximum rates and are ceilings, not confirmed prices. The Gelato link on this page is an affiliate link. Re-check the vendor pages before you freeze a price list.
FAQ
Which is better in 2026, Printful or Gelato?
Gelato is better for a US seller who wants the lowest landed cost: one Bella + Canvas 3001 costs $15.68 delivered on its free plan, against $16.87 on Printful's. Printful is better for a brand that needs one in-house production standard, embroidery with published setup fees, or more than 2 stores without paying for a plan.
How much does Printful cost compared with Gelato?
Both are free to start, and you pay for the product and shipping when an order arrives. Printful Growth is $24.99 a month with a 14-day trial and becomes free once yearly sales reach $12,000. Gelato+ is $29.99 a month, or $239.88 a year, also with a 14-day trial. Enterprise or custom pricing on either side is a sales conversation.
Is Gelato cheaper than Printful on the same t-shirt?
Yes, for US production. Gelato lists the Bella + Canvas 3001 at $10.69 and Printful at $11.92, about 10% less. Shipping is close on the first shirt, $4.99 against $4.95, but Gelato charges $0.99 for each extra shirt where Printful charges $2.20. Printful's 25-item bulk price of $10.37 is lower, and it only applies to a single order of that size.
Does Gelato+ include shipping discounts?
No. Gelato's subscription FAQ says shipping discounts are not part of the plan, and product discounts only begin after the 14-day trial turns into a paid subscription. Cancelling Gelato+ also uninstalls the apps it enabled. A seller weighing the plan for margin should count only the product discount shown on their own SKUs.
How many stores can I connect on each free plan?
Printful's free plan allows unlimited stores plus 10 Quick Stores. Gelato's free plan allows 2 stores and 2 users, and Gelato+ raises that to 10 stores and 5 users. A seller running separate shops on Etsy, Shopify and a wholesale site needs Gelato+ for the store count, which adds the plan fee to every month on the Gelato side.
Where do Printful and Gelato print orders?
Printful produces in-house and says 86% of orders are fulfilled in the customer's region, with 2 to 5 business days for production and fulfillment. Gelato routes orders to 250+ production partners in 32 countries; the Bella + Canvas 3001 alone is produced in 13. Gelato reaches more buyers locally, while Printful keeps one quality process across its own facilities.
