Ten themes compared on price, preview terms, review split and store fit, with the free catalog set against the paid one.

Product links may be affiliate links. How we rate 10 tools compared
TL;DR

Short answer: start with Dawn, free and made by Shopify, unless your category points to a paid theme. The Theme Store lists 1,311 theme listings, and only 24 cost nothing. For a fashion store, Impulse has the most reviews of our six paid picks. For beauty, Sleek has 619 of 621 reviews positive.

Each paid theme we checked is a one-time purchase for one store, and each listing we checked lets you preview in your own store before paying. On Shopify Basic billed yearly, year one costs $348 with a free theme and $698 with Sleek.

Key facts10 tools compared: Dawn, Horizon, Craft, Trade, Impulse, Prestige, Sleek, Hyper, Ignite, Monk
  • Updated: October 11, 2026
  • Top pick: Dawn (best for: Product-led stores that want Shopify's default theme and the most free-theme reviews)
  • Top pick price as of October 11, 2026: Dawn: Free, by Shopify; the listing shows no paid tier or upgrade price
  • 10 tools compared: Dawn, Horizon, Craft, Trade, Impulse, Prestige, Sleek, Hyper, Ignite, Monk
  • Horizon (best for: Stores that want pre-order, back-in-stock alerts and quick view without paying for a theme): Free, by Shopify; the listing shows no paid tier or upgrade price
  • Craft (best for: Makers and brands that sell on a story and want room for long-form brand content): Free, by Shopify; the listing shows no paid tier or upgrade price
  • Trade (best for: Wholesale and B2B sellers that need trade-style layouts without buying a theme): Free, by Shopify; the listing describes it as built for wholesale

Most theme lists skip the question that decides the budget: how many themes are free.

Everything else on the Theme Store is a paid listing. The real choice is which paid theme fits your category, and whether a free one already covers your store.

Retailpresso data: we counted the Theme Store listings on 10 October 2026, finding 1,287 paid against 24 free, which is 98% paid.

The 24 free themes hold 478 positive reviews out of 1,348 (35%). The median paid listing with reviews shows 98% positive on its card. These are the store's own labels, not a test of the themes.

How we chose these ten: the four free themes with the most reviews or a distinct use case, and six paid themes picked for category fit.

Prices were checked on 10 October 2026 on each Theme Store listing and on Shopify's pricing page. We did not run speed tests, so speed appears only as each listing states it. Themes with fewer than 50 reviews get a raw count, not a percentage.

What it is

A Shopify theme is the design layer of a Shopify store. It sets the page layouts, product pages and navigation, and you change its content through sections in the theme editor. The four free picks are published by Shopify. Every paid theme we checked came from an outside developer and is sold once.

Why it matters

The theme sets what every shopper sees, so it is the one purchase that touches every page. A theme that already has the features your catalog needs can make some add-ons unnecessary, and the apps that still earn their fee are covered in our best Shopify apps guide.

Switching themes later means reworking your templates, so the choice is hard to undo. On Shopify Basic billed yearly at $29 a month, a $350 one-time theme costs about as much as a full year of the plan.

Key features to look for

Price modelEssential
Free themes cost $0. Paid listings are one-time purchases with a lifetime license for one store and no expiration. The Shopify plan under the theme is a separate, recurring cost.
Preview before you payEssential
Each listing we checked has a Try theme button, and the store says you only pay when you publish. Test the theme on your own products before any money changes hands.
Review share and sample size
A 35% positive share on 289 reviews is a weaker signal than 94% on 1,303. Read the count before the percentage, and skip any share built on fewer than 50 reviews.
Built-in features
Feature lists differ. Horizon lists pre-order and back-in-stock alerts, and Impulse lists promo tiles and size charts. Match the list to your catalog before you pay.
Speed claims
Listings say things like lightning-fast or 2x faster. None attaches a measured score, so run a PageSpeed test on your own store before you decide.
Store fit
Several paid themes target one category: fashion (Impulse), beauty (Sleek), luxury (Prestige), B2B (Hyper) and multi-vendor marketplaces (Monk). A general store does best with a free theme or a general paid one.

Pricing

Free themes cost nothing, and the four free picks come from Shopify. Paid listings run from $100 to $500, and across the 1,287 paid listings the median price is $320. Count each of the 320 theme families once, at its lowest-priced listing, and the median falls by $20.

Each paid listing we checked is a one-time payment for a lifetime license for one store, with no expiration, as the listing states.

The recurring cost is the plan.

On Shopify's pricing page, prices checked on 10 October 2026, Basic is $29 a month billed yearly or $39 billed monthly, and Grow is $79 a month billed yearly or $105 monthly. Year one on Basic billed yearly is $348 before apps and card fees.

A free theme leaves the year there, Monk makes it $648, Sleek makes it $698 and Impulse makes it $848.

The listings themselves sit on the free collection, and the full Theme Store holds the paid ones.

Mistakes to avoid
×Buying on the sticker price. The most expensive pick comes to $848 in year one on Shopify Basic billed yearly, before apps and card fees.
×Trusting a percentage on a small sample. Craft's 56% rests on 50 reviews, and Trade's 41 are too few for any share.
×Choosing a niche theme for a general store. Impulse's shoppable hero and size charts suit apparel, and a general store pays for layouts it will not use.
×Paying before you preview. Use the Try theme button on each listing and test on your own products first.
×Treating a free theme as the weak option. Dawn has the most reviews of any free theme, and Horizon adds pre-order and stock features. Read its 35% positive share in context.
×Missing a plan limit on B2B features. Part of Trade's feature set is described as a Shopify Plus benefit, so check it against your plan first.
Expert tips
→Preview two themes in your own store with real products, then compare how each loads on a phone with a free PageSpeed Insights run on your own URL.
→Start from the category: fashion, beauty, luxury, B2B or marketplace. A category theme beats a general one when the listed features match your catalog.
→Read the review count before the share. Under 50 reviews is an early signal only.
→Set the theme budget against the plan: on Basic billed yearly at $29 a month, a full year of the plan ($348) costs more than the median paid theme ($320).

The bottom line

For most stores, start with a free theme: Dawn for product-led catalogs, or Horizon if you need pre-order and stock features. Pay only when the category match is clear, because most paid picks serve a niche: Impulse for fashion, Sleek for beauty, Prestige for luxury, Hyper for B2B and Monk for marketplaces.

Each paid listing we checked is a one-time purchase, and each listing we checked lets you preview in your own store first.
