The Best SMS Marketing Apps for Shopify in 2026

Klaviyo bundles SMS into the email platform you already run. Postscript, Attentive and Recart sell SMS as the main product, with a real monthly floor before your first campaign.

Independently researched. No pay-for-placement. 8 tools compared
TL;DR

Klaviyo fits stores already running email marketing: SMS starts at $15/mo for 1,250 credits, stacked on a free plan that includes 150 SMS credits a month. Postscript is the SMS-first specialist, from $49/mo minimum spend on Starter with per-message rates as low as $0.007 on its top tier. Attentive and Recart sell to larger lists, at custom pricing and $299/mo respectively, and Privy bundles SMS with email from $45/mo. Shopify's own Shopify Messaging needs no separate app and charges $0.012 per US text.

Every Shopify store gets pitched the same argument for SMS marketing: open rates email cannot match, sent to a channel customers actually check. What differs by app is where SMS sits inside the pricing. Klaviyo and Omnisend treat it as a paid add-on to an email-first plan.

Postscript, Attentive, Recart and Emotive build the whole subscription around text. Privy sells it as a third tier next to popups and email, and Shopify Messaging skips the third-party app entirely and bills per message inside the admin you already have.

We read the current Shopify App Store listing and pricing page for each of the eight below, in September 2026.

Retailpresso data: Toolradar, the software directory we run, evaluated 24 SMS marketing tools for its September 2026 ranking and lists a free plan on only 9 of them.

One name worth ruling out first: Yotpo SMS, built from Yotpo's 2020 acquisition of SMSBump, has been decommissioned and its dashboard no longer runs, confirmed on Yotpo's own SMS platform pages. Anyone still comparing SMSBump pricing is shopping for a product that no longer exists.

What it is

An SMS marketing app for Shopify collects phone number opt-ins, sends promotional and automated texts (welcome, abandoned cart, back in stock, post-purchase) and reports revenue back against Shopify's own order data.

Every app below connects through the Shopify App Store, and every text sent in the US carries a real per-message or per-credit cost on top of the monthly subscription.

TCPA still governs consent for all of them: a consumer's prior express written consent is required before a marketing text goes out, regardless of the FCC's one-to-one consent rule, which a federal appeals court vacated before it took effect.

Why it matters

The number on the plan tile is rarely the number that determines your bill. Postscript, Recart and Emotive charge a monthly seat plus a per-message rate that falls as volume rises, so a list growing from 2,000 to 10,000 subscribers can double a store's SMS invoice even at the same plan tier.

Klaviyo and Omnisend bundle SMS credits into an email-first plan, so the line looks cheap until the credits run out mid-month and overage bills separately.

Consent is not a formality. A text sent without documented, written consent risks a TCPA claim.

Every app here builds opt-in language and quiet hours into onboarding, but the store owner, not the app, carries the liability if a list was never genuinely double opted in.

Key features to look for

Where SMS sits in the platform
Klaviyo and Omnisend add SMS credits to an email-first plan. Postscript, Attentive, Recart and Emotive build the whole subscription around text. That decision decides which line item grows fastest as your list does.
The real per-message rate
Every metered app quotes a lower per-message rate at higher volume, so the plan tile is a floor, not the total. Recart's rate drops from $0.010 to $0.0070 a text between its Starter and Scale plans.
Minimum spend versus a credit model
Postscript, Emotive and Recart set a monthly minimum you pay whether or not you send that many texts. A store under that floor is usually cheaper on Klaviyo or Omnisend's credit model instead.
TCPA consent and quiet hours
Every text needs prior express written consent on file before it sends. Check how each app captures and timestamps opt-in before your first send, not after a complaint arrives.
Shopify App Store rating and review count
A rating near 4.7 to 4.8 with thousands of reviews (Postscript, Omnisend, Shopify Messaging) signals a mature install base. A smaller review count is more install-day risk, not necessarily a worse product.

Pricing

Every app here that publishes a plan price shows it on both its own pricing page and its Shopify App Store listing, and none of the eight is fully quote-only except Attentive. The cheapest way to send a first text is Klaviyo's free plan, or Omnisend's free plan once you add the Pro tier that turns SMS on.

The highest fixed monthly floor before a single message goes out is Recart's Starter, quoted above.

Omnisend's own pricing page shows Standard and Pro at a lower rate than its Shopify App Store listing, a 30% discount off the list price shown in the table above, for the first three months only. We used the list price in the table below and note the promo separately here.

Attentive publishes no list price on its own site or its Shopify listing beyond a free 30-day trial: every plan past that is negotiated by list size and message volume, so it publishes no list price rather than a number we could quote.

Yotpo's SMSBump, still suggested by some older roundups, has been decommissioned and does not appear in this ranking.

We verified every price on the vendor's own pricing page and its Shopify App Store listing (see Klaviyo and Omnisend on Toolradar for standalone profiles) in September 2026.

Methodology: we read each app's current plan tiers and per-message rates, cross-checked them against its Shopify App Store listing for rating, review count and pricing tile, and confirmed live status on the vendor's own site; no paid placements on this list.

Mistakes to avoid
×Comparing the plan tile price and stopping there. Postscript, Recart and Emotive add a per-message rate on top, so the same 2,000-text month costs a different total on each app even at similar-looking base plans.
×Still shopping for SMSBump. Yotpo's SMS product built from that acquisition has been decommissioned and no longer runs. Any 2026 roundup that still ranks it is stale.
×Skipping Attentive because it shows no price. It publishes none anywhere, on its own site or its Shopify listing, so budget a real sales conversation before assuming it is out of reach.
×Sending the first campaign on a list that never gave documented, written consent. TCPA liability sits with the store, not the app, whatever the app's own opt-in flow looks like.
Expert tips
→Add up the monthly minimum spend and a realistic message count before comparing plan tiles. Postscript, Recart and Emotive all bill a floor whether or not you hit it.
→Start on Klaviyo or Omnisend's free tier if your list is under a few hundred contacts. Both include real SMS credits before you commit to a paid app.
→Ask Attentive for a written quote before a demo call, not during one. Its published pricing gives you nothing to negotiate against otherwise.
→Read the Shopify App Store review count next to the star rating, not the star rating alone. Shopify Messaging's 4.8 stars across 4,529 reviews carries more signal than Emotive's 4 stars across 94.

The bottom line

Start with Klaviyo if email already runs through it: the free plan's SMS credits are enough to test, and a low-cost paid tier buys more once you commit. Move to Postscript when SMS becomes its own channel and you want a rate that falls with volume from a modest starting floor.

Omnisend is the cheaper email-first alternative to Klaviyo if your list is smaller.

Attentive and Recart fit larger lists that can absorb a steep monthly floor for a bigger volume discount.

Privy is the simplest bundle for a small store adding popups, email and SMS on one bill. Emotive undercuts the SMS specialists on price for a small list.

Skip the third-party app entirely with Shopify Messaging if you want the lowest US per-message rate and do not need deep automation.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best SMS marketing app for Shopify in 2026?
Klaviyo for stores that already run email marketing, since SMS shares segments and flows and starts at $15/mo for 1,250 credits after a free plan that includes 150. Postscript for a dedicated SMS-first product from $49/mo minimum spend, with a per-message rate that falls as volume grows. Attentive and Recart suit larger lists willing to pay a higher floor, $299/mo and up, for steeper volume pricing. There is no single best app for every list size.
How much does SMS marketing cost on Shopify?
From $0/mo (Klaviyo and Omnisend free tiers, though Omnisend needs the Pro plan to turn SMS on) up to Recart's Scale plan before per-message charges. Per-message rates on the apps that publish one range from a fraction of a cent at high volume to $0.015 (Emotive Starter), and Shopify Messaging charges a low flat rate per US message with no app subscription. Attentive publishes no list price and quotes by list size and volume instead.
Is there a free SMS marketing app for Shopify?
Klaviyo's free plan includes 150 SMS/MMS credits a month for up to 250 contacts, the most usable free SMS allowance of the eight apps here, checked on the Shopify App Store, September 2026. Privy, Recart and Omnisend all have free tiers too, but SMS itself sits behind a paid tier on Recart's usage and Omnisend's Pro plan. Shopify Messaging is free to install and bills per message rather than charging a subscription.
What happened to SMSBump?
Yotpo acquired SMSBump in 2020 and rebranded it as Yotpo SMS. Yotpo's own SMS platform pages confirm the application has been decommissioned and its dashboard is no longer active. Any current comparison of SMSBump pricing is comparing a discontinued product.
Klaviyo vs Postscript vs Attentive: which should I pick?
Klaviyo if email marketing already runs through it and you want SMS on the same segments, at a low monthly cost. Postscript if SMS is the primary channel and you want a lower entry price, with a per-message rate that falls as you scale. Attentive if the list is large enough to justify a negotiated enterprise deal and you are comfortable with unpublished pricing. Running two of the three on the same list usually means double-billing for the same subscribers.
Does Shopify have a built-in SMS marketing tool?
Yes. Shopify Messaging sends SMS, email and WhatsApp campaigns from inside the Shopify admin on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Shopify Plus plans, with no third-party app required. US SMS costs $0.012 per message plus a $2.15/mo toll-free number fee, checked on Shopify's help center, September 2026. Shopify's own documentation recommends a dedicated app for deeper automation and segmentation.
What is TCPA and why does it matter for Shopify SMS marketing?
The Telephone Consumer Protection Act requires documented, prior express written consent before sending marketing texts to a US phone number. The FCC adopted a one-to-one consent rule that would have tied that consent to a single sender rather than a shared opt-in covering multiple companies, but a federal appeals court vacated the rule before it took effect, so the existing written-consent standard still governs. Every app on this list builds opt-in capture into onboarding, but the store, not the app, is liable if a list was never properly double opted in.
