Klaviyo Review 2026: Is It Worth It for Shopify Stores?

Klaviyo's price at key active-profile bands, what the free plan covers, and four alternatives, each priced from its own vendor or app page.

TL;DR

Klaviyo is worth it for a Shopify store whose flows bring repeat orders, and a poor buy for a large list that rarely buys. The free plan covers 250 active profiles and 500 email sends a month. The Email plan starts at $20 a month for 251 to 500 profiles and reaches $150 a month at 10,000, read on Klaviyo's US pricing page in October 2026. Texting is a separate meter from $15 a month, and a store that mails rarely can get by with a cheaper sender.

Klaviyo's bill moves mainly with the number of active profiles on your list, not with the number of emails you send, unless sends outgrow a band's cap. That one rule decides whether the platform pays for itself, so this review tests the verdict at real store sizes rather than against the headline price.

It is written for store owners and merchandisers who already sell online and are choosing a sender for abandoned-cart, browse and post-purchase emails. It covers the free plan, the Email price at key profile bands, texting, the add-ons that change the bill, and four alternatives priced on their own pages. This is a pricing and feature read, not a hands-on test of the product.

Methodology: list prices read on each vendor's own pricing or app-listing page in October 2026, in USD on monthly billing, then compared at store sizes from 500 to 50,000 profiles. The scenarios are our arithmetic on those prices, not a quote from any vendor.

Dupple's own newsletters run on beehiiv, not on Klaviyo or on any sender compared here.

Toolradar data: Klaviyo's profile on Toolradar, the software directory we run, averages 4.6 out of 5 from 1,901 reviews on G2 and Capterra, last checked 17 September 2026.

A platform-wide rating reflects user satisfaction across many stores, not yours, so the price figures further down carry more weight for the decision.

What is Klaviyo?

Klaviyo is an email and SMS platform whose Email plan counts active profiles, the contacts that can receive marketing, instead of the emails you send. Its pricing page sells a free plan, an Email plan that scales by profile band, a separate SMS plan and paid add-ons, of which Composer is the AI assistant.

Klaviyo says its library holds more than 350 ready-made integrations and that its unified profiles keep unlimited historical data, so the pitch is one customer record shared by email, text and reporting.

If you are still choosing a category, our email marketing apps for Shopify ranking lays the cheaper senders out side by side. For review and loyalty tools that sit next to a sender, start with customer review platforms.

How Klaviyo works

Klaviyo's Email plan works in bands. Each band pairs a range of active profiles with a price and a send cap: 5,000 sends at 251 to 500 profiles, 50,000 sends at 3,501 to 5,000, and 100,000 sends at 6,501 to 10,000. Each band's send cap is roughly ten times its profile ceiling, so for a store that mails normally, list size sets the bill.

Cross a boundary and the price steps up. At 10,000 profiles the Email plan costs $150 a month, and the first profile past that line moves you to $175, a $25 jump for one contact.

Texting runs on a second meter. SMS is sold as a message allowance from $15 a month for 1,250 messages, and the calculator steps run to $25 for 2,500, $45 for 5,000 and $90 for 10,000. Klaviyo's pricing page links to a separate explainer on carrier fees, and it recommends a short code once a store texts more than 95,000 people a month.

For the texting side on its own, see our SMS apps for Shopify guide.

The free plan is where a new store starts. Klaviyo's own FAQ says it suits Shopify, WooCommerce and Wix stores that are starting out, and the plan includes built-in reporting. That makes it a sensible place to test email and SMS before paying anything, provided the list stays under the limits.

Klaviyo key features

Free plan with real limitsEssential
250 active profiles, 500 email sends, and $5 each of mobile messages and Composer usage a month, plus built-in reporting. Email support lasts 60 days, after which the help center and community take over. That is enough to test email and SMS with a small list, and not enough to run a growing store on.
Band-based Email pricingEssential
Each profile band has one price and one send cap, from the 251 to 500 band up to $720 a month at 45,001 to 50,000 profiles. The bill is predictable while your list is steady. It is harder to forecast for a store with a holiday spike, because a surge of sign-ups can move you up a band before the sends that justify it arrive.
Integrations and unified profiles
The Email plan lists more than 350 ready-made integrations and unified profiles with unlimited historical data. That matters when your order history, reviews and ad data should all feed one customer record. It matters far less if your store runs on two or three apps you never connect to email.
AI and predictive tools
The Email plan includes predictive analytics, reporting dashboards and AI-generated segments, content and images. Composer, the paid AI assistant, gives four times the free plan's usage and can generate flows, according to Klaviyo's pricing page. Budget it as its own line, because the Email bill does not include it.
Texting as a second meter
SMS is a separate plan that sits on top of the Email bill. A store running both channels should price them together and recheck the total whenever either list crosses a band, because the two meters move independently.

Klaviyo pricing

Klaviyo's US pricing page sets every Email price through a band table, and that table is the source for each email figure on this page. We read it in October 2026, on monthly billing. Source: Klaviyo pricing, verified October 2026.

Three store sizes show how the bill moves.

At 500 active profiles the Email plan works out to $0.04 per profile per month. At 5,000 profiles it costs $100 a month, or $1,200 a year, and the cost falls to $0.02 per profile. At 50,000 profiles it is $720 a month, or $8,640 a year, at $0.0144 per profile.

The cost per profile keeps falling as the list grows, but the total rises at every band boundary, so compare sizes by cost per profile rather than by the headline bill.

Texting and add-ons push the bill up from there. A 500-profile store on the Email plan with the smallest SMS plan pays $35 a month.

Klaviyo's limited-time offer takes $19 off the first month of the Email plan for up to 500 profiles, so a new store's first bill can be $1.

Composer is an extra monthly line, and Personalization is a separate add-on, so check each one before you assume the Email plan is the whole bill.

A Shopify store that mails rarely can price a similar list on Shopify's own email app instead.

The app listing gives 10,000 emails a month free, then a starting rate of $1 per 1,000 emails. For 50,000 emails in a month, that is 40,000 billed emails, or $40 a month, against Klaviyo's $100 a month at 3,501 to 5,000 profiles.

The two bills measure different things, a send count against a profile count, so the comparison shows the direction of the cost rather than a winner. The full band-by-band table, with the SMS steps and add-on prices, sits in our Klaviyo pricing guide.

What could be better

  • The bill moves with profiles: the first profile past 10,000 costs $25 a month more.

  • Deeper insight than standard reporting comes from Personalization, a separate add-on.

Who Klaviyo is for

Klaviyo fits a Shopify store that mails an active list and earns repeat orders from its flows. The test is margin. If the gross profit that abandoned-cart, browse and post-purchase emails bring in during a month is larger than that month's Klaviyo bill, the platform pays its way.

If it is smaller, the flows are not earning their keep, and a cheaper sender is the better buy. For the recovery side, see our guide to reducing cart abandonment.

It is a weaker fit when most of the list never buys.

Every inactive profile sits inside the band you pay for, so a store that collects addresses at checkout or through giveaways and never cleans the list pays for contacts who will not open.

Suppressing dormant profiles is the lever that lowers the bill, and it costs little in sales when those profiles were never going to buy.

A store with a small list and one newsletter a month does not need the flows that justify this bill.

Read our email marketing apps for Shopify ranking first, and check the Shopify review for the platform side of the decision.

Stores that also want reviews and loyalty should compare Yotpo before adding a second vendor.

Texting changes the answer for some stores. If SMS will carry abandoned-cart reminders and drop announcements, the SMS allowance is a modest line that pays off if the reminders convert. If texting is a side project, leave it off until the email flows show a return.

The bottom line

Klaviyo is worth it for a Shopify store whose flows earn repeat orders, and a poor buy for a large list that rarely buys. The free plan lets you test email and SMS before paying, and the Email bill is a monthly cost that has to be justified against the sales those flows add.

Price the band your list will reach in twelve months, not the one you have today.

Compare the alternatives at your own count.

Omnisend and Mailchimp price on contacts, Privy on mailable contacts and Shopify Email on emails.

Those are different units, so each vendor's own calculator is the final check. Toolradar also keeps profiles for Omnisend, Mailchimp and Privy.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Klaviyo cost in 2026?

The free plan covers 250 active profiles and 500 email sends a month at $0. The Email plan is billed by profile band, starting at the 251 to 500 band and reaching $150 a month at 10,000 profiles, as read on Klaviyo's US pricing page in October 2026. SMS is a separate plan that starts with a 1,250-message allowance.

Is Klaviyo worth it for a small Shopify store?

Yes, when the flows bring in more gross profit each month than the Klaviyo bill, and that comparison is the test to run before you commit. It is a weak buy when most of the list never buys, because every inactive profile sits inside the band you pay for. A store that sends one newsletter a month can use a cheaper sender.

Is there a free Klaviyo plan?

Yes, and it is generous for a test. The Free plan allows 250 active profiles and 500 email sends a month at no charge, with $5 of mobile messages and $5 of Composer usage on top, plus built-in reporting. A store past those limits needs a paid plan.

How much does Klaviyo SMS cost?

SMS is a separate plan with a message allowance, starting at 1,250 messages a month for $15 and rising to 10,000 messages for $90. Klaviyo recommends a short code once you text more than 95,000 people a month, and a short code is billed on top of the plan. Carrier fees are explained on a separate page linked from its pricing page.

Is Klaviyo cheaper than Mailchimp or Omnisend?

At small lists the entry prices sit in the same range. Klaviyo's Email plan starts at the 251 to 500 profile band, Omnisend's Standard lists at $16 a month, and Mailchimp's Essentials is $13 a month for 12 months. Each vendor counts contacts differently, and the pages do not state the contact count behind every list price, so run your own count in each calculator.

Is Klaviyo better than Shopify Email?

They price different units. Shopify Email includes 10,000 emails a month and then charges $1 per 1,000 emails, while Klaviyo charges by active profile. At 50,000 emails a month, Shopify Email bills $40 beyond its free allowance, against $100 a month on Klaviyo's 3,501 to 5,000 profile band. That is not a like-for-like comparison, so pick the tool by the unit your list grows in.
