BigCommerce Review 2026

What BigCommerce's four plans cost in 2026 once sales caps and payment fees are counted, and which stores it suits.

TL;DR

BigCommerce is worth it for a growing store that wants a hosted platform with no platform fee on the major payment gateways. Core starts at $29 a month billed yearly, but the plans step up with sales: Core covers up to $30,000 of trailing 12-month GMV, Growth up to $100,000, and Scale up to $33,333 a month. A store doing $5,000 a month pays $948 a year on Growth billed yearly with an embedded provider, or $1,488 if every order runs through an open one. The catch is the cap jump. Moving from Growth to Scale adds $2,640 a year on annual billing.

BigCommerce's entry plan looks cheap, but the real bill is decided by two other things: the sales cap that moves you to a pricier plan, and the fee on any payment provider outside its embedded list.

This review covers what each plan includes, how the sales caps are measured, where the payment fees apply, and where BigCommerce falls short. We price a sample store at $5,000 a month in sales and show where the costs step up. Every BigCommerce figure below comes from its own pricing page, read in October 2026.

If you are comparing it with the rest of the field, our best ecommerce platforms ranking puts it next to the other hosted options.

The category is crowded: Toolradar data: of the 104 e-commerce platforms we track, 33 percent are free, freemium or open source, and the median cheapest paid plan is $42 a month. BigCommerce has no free plan, only a trial.

What is BigCommerce?

BigCommerce is a hosted ecommerce platform. You do not run servers, patch software or manage security, and the store sits on BigCommerce's infrastructure behind one monthly bill. Its pricing page lists over 1,200 apps, more than 70 discount options built in, and selling in over 100 currencies through the payment provider you choose.

It also markets migrations from Shopify, WooCommerce, Salesforce and Magento, which matters if you are leaving one of them. For the comparison with the market leader, read our Shopify review. For the full Toolradar listing, see its BigCommerce profile.

How BigCommerce works

The 15-day free trial needs no credit card, and you can launch a store and take payments during it once you connect a payments partner. If you do not upgrade when the trial ends, BigCommerce keeps your data for 90 days and then deletes the store.

Core, Growth and Scale have no contract, and cancelling stops billing immediately. Compare that with the free ecommerce website options, which cost nothing up front but charge you elsewhere.

The plan you pick is not fixed. BigCommerce measures your trailing 12-month GMV, notifies you when you pass a plan limit, and upgrades you automatically. That step is easy to miss, and it is the first thing to model before you choose.

Support also depends on the tier: Growth, Scale and Performance include 24/7 phone support, while Core gets chat and email, and BigCommerce lists a Core phone add-on as coming soon.

The top tier works differently. Performance starts at $1,499 a month billed annually under a contract, and it adds a dedicated customer success manager and custom payment terms. The page asks for a demo rather than a card, so expect a sales conversation before you see a final price.

BigCommerce key features

Zero-fee embedded paymentsEssential
Orders processed through BigCommerce's embedded payment providers carry no platform fee on any plan. The list includes BigCommerce Payments, Stripe, PayPal Braintree, Adyen, Checkout.com and Klarna. BigCommerce says the list can change, so confirm your provider is on it before you sign up.
Promotions built in
The store ships with more than 70 discount options, covering coupons, discounts and gift cards, so most merchants do not need a promotions app. For a store running regular sales, that removes one monthly subscription from the bill.
Multi-currency and storefronts
Payments in over 100 currencies work through your chosen provider. Extra storefronts are a paid add-on: $30 a month for up to 3 on Core, $50 for up to 5 on Growth, and $100 for up to 8 on Scale.
Marketplace and POS connections
The platform connects to Amazon, eBay and Walmart, and to point-of-sale systems such as Square, Vend and Clover. That covers a store that sells on marketplaces and in person without a separate order tool.
Free ad-channel feeds
Feedonomics Surface sends product listings to Google, Meta, TikTok, Microsoft and Pinterest. BigCommerce lists it as free with every plan, and the basic version is free for up to 100,000 SKUs.

BigCommerce pricing

BigCommerce publishes its plan prices in US dollars on its pricing page, which we checked in October 2026. Core is $29 a month billed yearly or $39 monthly, Growth is $79 billed yearly or $105 monthly, and Scale is $299 billed yearly or $399 monthly.

The page advertises 25 percent off for yearly billing, and prices exclude tax. Performance starts at $1,499 a month billed annually under a contract, which is at least $17,988 a year.

Core and Growth are sized by trailing 12-month GMV, which BigCommerce defines as gross order value minus 10 percent. Core covers up to $30,000 of GMV a year, which is about $33,333 of gross sales. Growth covers $100,000 of GMV. Scale is measured by the month instead: it covers $33,333 of GMV a month, with a 0.9 percent overage above that line.

Before you budget, convert your monthly sales into trailing GMV by multiplying by 12 and by 0.9, then check which cap that figure sits under.

The open payment provider fee is the cost most buyers overlook. BigCommerce bills it monthly on Core, Growth and Scale for orders processed by a provider outside its embedded list: 2.0 percent of that GMV on Core, 1.0 percent on Growth, 0.6 percent on Scale, and 0 percent on Performance with a contract. It is separate from the fee your processor charges.

Methodology: we read BigCommerce's pricing page in October 2026, priced a sample store at $5,000 a month in sales, and quote no competitor price unless it is confirmed in US dollars on that vendor's own page.

BigCommerce pros and cons

What we like

  • Zero platform fee on orders through embedded providers such as Stripe, PayPal Braintree and Adyen.
  • More built in: over 70 discount options and multi-currency selling, with extra storefronts as a paid add-on.
  • A 15-day trial with no card, and no contract on the three self-service plans.

What could be better

  • Sales caps trigger automatic upgrades, and the Growth to Scale step adds $220 a month on annual billing.
  • Open payment providers add a monthly fee of 0.6 to 2.0 percent of GMV on self-service plans.
  • Phone support starts at Growth, so the cheapest plan is chat and email only.

Who BigCommerce is for

BigCommerce suits a store that will grow past a few thousand dollars a month and wants payments with no platform fee on the major gateways. It is a weaker fit for a store that depends on a large third-party app library, needs phone support on the cheapest plan, or sells through a gateway outside the embedded list.

If your trailing sales sit near $30,000 of GMV, model the Core cap before you commit. Three costs catch buyers out. The first is the open provider fee, which adds $540 a year to a $5,000-a-month store on Growth. The second is the cap jump: once trailing GMV passes Growth's cap, the bill moves to Scale at $3,588 a year.

The third is the trial clock: a store that does not upgrade keeps its data for 90 days and is then deleted, so set a launch date before the 15 days run out. For the rival's full listing, see its Shopify profile on Toolradar.

Smaller stores with limited volume should compare it with cheaper Shopify alternatives before deciding.

The bottom line

BigCommerce is worth it when your payment provider is on its embedded list and your sales stay inside one plan. At $5,000 a month, that is $948 a year on Growth, plus whatever your processor charges. The bill rises at each cap: once trailing GMV passes Growth's cap, the step to Scale adds $2,640 a year on annual billing.

It rises again if you route orders through an open provider, which costs up to 2.0 percent on Core.

Choose it for a store that wants built-in promotions and multi-currency selling without a platform fee on Stripe or PayPal Braintree. Skip it if your sales sit close to a cap you cannot afford, or if you need a large third-party app library.

If self-hosting appeals instead, our WooCommerce pricing guide prices the open-source route, and the best Shopify apps guide covers the app side of the hosted alternatives.

Frequently asked questions

How much does BigCommerce cost in 2026?

BigCommerce has three self-service plans with yearly billing: Core at $29 a month, Growth at $79 and Scale at $299. Billed monthly, the same plans cost $39, $105 and $399. Performance is custom and starts at $1,499 a month billed annually under a contract. Add open payment provider fees if you route orders outside its embedded list, plus storefront add-ons from $30 a month.

Is there a free BigCommerce plan or free trial?

There is no free plan, but BigCommerce offers a 15-day free trial with no credit card. You can launch a store and take payments during the trial once you connect a payments partner. If you do not upgrade, BigCommerce keeps your data for 90 days before the store is deleted.

Does BigCommerce charge transaction fees?

Not through its embedded payment providers, which carry no platform fee on any plan. Through an open provider, BigCommerce adds a monthly fee of 2.0 percent of GMV on Core, 1.0 percent on Growth, 0.6 percent on Scale, and 0 percent on Performance with a contract. Your processor's own card rate is separate from that fee.

When does BigCommerce upgrade my plan automatically?

BigCommerce measures trailing 12-month GMV, which is gross order value minus 10 percent. When a store passes Core's $30,000 or Growth's $100,000, BigCommerce notifies you and upgrades you to the next plan. On Scale there is no hard block: sales above the monthly limit carry a 0.9 percent overage rate, and the account moves to Performance at $2 million in trailing GMV.

Is BigCommerce worth it for a small store?

It can be. For a store with up to about $33,000 in gross sales a year, Core is the cheapest BigCommerce plan at $348 a year on yearly billing. It has no contract and no platform fee on embedded payments, but Core includes chat and email support only, and a phone add-on is listed as coming soon. If you need a phone line from day one, price Growth at $79 a month billed yearly.
