Lightspeed Retail Review 2026
What Lightspeed Retail costs at three price points, where its stock and wholesale tools lead, and when Square or Shopify POS costs less.
Lightspeed Retail is the stronger tool for inventory-heavy shops with several locations, but for one register it costs more than Square's free plan at the rate it prints on its POS page. Its base plans are listed at $89 a month (Basic), $149 (Core) and $289 (Plus), with extra registers and locations quoted on request. At $30,000 a month in card sales, Lightspeed Basic comes to $944 a month, against $892.50 on Square's free plan.
One figure reverses that. Lightspeed's retail pricing page prints a 1.5% card-present rate, which would put the same Basic plan at $539 a month. Confirm the rate in writing before you compare totals.

Lightspeed Retail is built for the shops where back-office work takes the most hours: multi-location retailers, boutiques with size and color variants, and stores that reorder from wholesale brands.
It charges for that depth from the first day, even on its entry plan. A point-of-sale system also sets how stock is counted, how purchase orders go out and how much margin you keep once the month closes.
The question for a single-register shop is whether that depth pays. This review prices Lightspeed against Square's free plan and Shopify POS at one fixed scenario, using the rates each vendor prints on its own pages. The processing rate moves the total more than any other number, and Lightspeed's own pages do not agree on it, so that gets its own section.
Prices and terms here come from the vendors' published pages, read in October 2026. Toolradar data: Lightspeed earns 4.4 out of 5 on G2 from 816 reviews, but only 3.8 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 2,513 reviews, per the Toolradar Lightspeed page, last checked in September 2026.
The figures that matter most for a buying decision are often the ones vendors leave off the page, such as extra-register pricing and hardware costs. Those are flagged as open rather than estimated.
What is Lightspeed Retail?
Lightspeed Retail is the retail product from Lightspeed Commerce, a point-of-sale and payments company. The vendor says its retail prices reflect Lightspeed Retail (X-Series), so that is the version to ask about.
The product runs the register, takes card payments through Lightspeed Payments, and holds products, stock levels and customer records in one cloud system.
Three extras matter more than the register for most buyers: a wholesale ordering network through NuORDER, a built-in online store that draws on the same inventory across all channels, and a reporting layer with forecasting. That combination is what makes it a back-office platform rather than a checkout app.
How Lightspeed Retail works
Setup starts with the catalog. You load products and their variants, then sync purchase orders with NuORDER, where wholesale orders sync with the POS. The Mobile Scanner app turns an iOS or Android phone into a stock counter, which is the practical way to count a store's shelves into the system.
Day to day, the register takes card payments through Lightspeed Payments, and the reports show what sold, which variant sold and what to reorder. Landed costs spread freight and duty across product prices, so the margin you see is closer to the margin you keep.
Insights adds forecasting, order recommendations and custom reports that can be emailed on a schedule.
The weak spot is the work before the first sale. A clean catalog with variants takes time, and that time is a real cost the pricing page does not show.
Lightspeed Retail key features
Lightspeed Retail pricing
Lightspeed's retail pricing page, read in October 2026, lists three monthly base plans, Basic, Core and Plus, priced in the table below. Each plan includes one register.
Extra locations and additional registers show "Contact sales", and the page warns that additional service fees may apply depending on the nature of the business. The annual toggle is labeled as saving up to 18%.
The processing rate is where the vendor's own pages disagree.
The retail pricing page lists a 1.5% card-present rate on each plan, with no per-transaction fee shown.
The main POS page quotes 2.6% + $0.10 per in-person transaction and 2.9% + $0.30 for card-not-present, and the golf payments page gives the same in-person rate.
The two figures do not reconcile, so the cost figures below run both. Get the card-present rate in writing before you sign. The payments page lists a single $15 chargeback fee and no rate card.
Hardware has no published price on Lightspeed's hardware page, so budget for terminals on the quote.
Read the contract before you commit.
Lightspeed's service agreement sets the initial term in your order form and renews it for the same length until either side ends it. Ending early triggers an early termination fee that includes the recurring fees left in the current term.
Discounted or free hardware also requires you to stay at least 24 months, or pay back the hardware plus shipping.
Here is the scenario used throughout: one register, $30,000 of card-present sales a month and a $40 average ticket, which is 750 sales.
Lightspeed Basic at 2.6% + 10¢ is $780 plus $75, or $855 in processing, and $944 with the subscription. At the 1.5% rate, processing is $450 and the total is $539.
Square's free plan costs $780 plus $112.50 (750 sales at 15¢), or $892.50 a month with no subscription.
Square Plus at 2.5% + 15¢ comes to $862.50 plus $49, or $911.50. Shopify with Basic and one POS Pro location comes to $983 a month including $855 of processing, or $951 on yearly billing at $29 and $67.
The break-even points matter more than any single total.
At 2.6% + 10¢, Lightspeed only beats Square's free plan above about 1,780 sales a month, roughly $71,200 of card sales at a $40 ticket. At 1.5%, it beats Square's free plan above roughly $6,000 of monthly card sales. The two readings give opposite advice for a single-register shop, which is why the rate matters more than the sticker price. These are our calculations on the printed rates, not a quote.

Who Lightspeed Retail is for
Lightspeed Retail fits a shop that has outgrown a basic register. That means several locations, a catalog with variants that needs purchase orders, or a regular habit of reordering from wholesale brands.
The landed-cost and forecasting tools reward a buyer who wants margin and stock decisions in one place.
It is a weak fit for a single register that sells a handful of products and wants the lowest bill. At one register, Square's free plan costs less at the rate Lightspeed prints on its POS page.
Lightspeed's entry price only pays for itself once the inventory work saves real hours. A shop that already runs an online store on Shopify should price Shopify POS next to it before deciding.
Best Lightspeed Retail alternatives
If Lightspeed Retail is not the right fit, these are the closest options.
| Tool | Best for | Starts at | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lightspeed Retail | Multi-location and inventory-heavy retailers that reorder from wholesale brands | From $89/mo (Basic base plan) | Visit → |
| Square POS | Single-location shops that want the lowest fixed cost and a free start | Free plan ($0 per location) | Visit → |
| Shopify POS | Retailers who already run a Shopify online store and want one system for both | Basic $39/mo plus POS Pro per location, billed monthly, or $67/mo per | Visit → |
The bottom line
For a multi-location or inventory-heavy retailer, Lightspeed Retail is the right first look. Its purchasing, variant and wholesale tools are what the subscription pays for. For a single register on a tight budget, Square's free plan costs less at the rate Lightspeed prints on its POS page.
Shopify POS suits a store that already runs on Shopify.
Settle two things before you sign: the card-present rate, which Lightspeed prints two ways, and the contract, which renews for the length of your initial term and charges an early termination fee.
Ask for both in writing, along with the price of any second register.
Methodology: plan prices, processing rates and contract terms come from Lightspeed's pricing, POS, golf payments, payments and service agreement pages, read in October 2026.
Square and Shopify prices come from their US pages and Shopify's US cost guide, read the same month. Ratings are the G2 and Trustpilot counts shown on Toolradar's Lightspeed page, last checked in September 2026.
Cost figures are our arithmetic on those rates at one stated scenario. We did not test the software.
