Pirate Ship vs Shippo (2026): Which Is Cheaper?
Pirate Ship vs Shippo in 2026: a free plan against Shippo's $17/month Pro plan, the carriers each covers, and the cost per label at 30, 100 and 200 labels.

For a seller shipping 100 US parcels a month, Pirate Ship is the cheaper tool before postage. It charges no subscription at any volume, while Shippo's Pro plan costs $17 a month once you ship more than 30 labels. Both prices come from the vendors' own pricing pages, checked on October 10, 2026. Shippo covers more carriers and automation, so the right pick depends on what you ship.
Toolradar data: Toolradar, the software directory we run, evaluated 43 shipping and fulfillment tools for its October 2026 ranking, and places Shippo fourth. Pirate Ship appears in that directory's browse list without a rank. For most small stores the decision comes down to a monthly fee against postage, so this page works through both.
The two plans side by side
| Pirate Ship | Shippo | |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly cost | Free, with no subscription at any volume | Starter is free up to 30 labels a month. Pro is $17 a month |
| Carriers | UPS and USPS | USPS, UPS, FedEx and DHL Express on Starter |
| Store connections | None named on its pages | Unlimited on Starter |
| Automations and return labels | Not listed on its rates page | Included on Starter |
| Team size | Not listed | 1 user on Starter, 5 or more on Pro |
| Best for | Domestic sellers on USPS or UPS who want no fixed cost | Sellers who need more carriers, automation or a team |
What each one costs at 30, 100 and 200 labels
These figures cover subscription fees only. Postage comes in the next section.
| Labels per month | Pirate Ship | Shippo | Shippo fee per label |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30 | $0 | $0 on Starter | $0 |
| 100 | $0 | $204 a year on Pro, billed monthly | 17 cents |
| 200 | $0 | $204 a year on Pro, billed monthly | 8.5 cents |
Shippo's pricing page prices Pro for its 1 to 200 label tier and shows no price above that. Get a quote from Shippo before you assume the fee holds at 500 labels a month. Up to 200 labels, the subscription is the whole gap before postage. At 100 labels a month, Shippo has to beat Pirate Ship's postage on the same parcel by 17 cents a label just to draw even.
If you bring your own carrier account, Shippo's Starter plan charges 5 cents a label, so 30 labels cost $1.50 a month. Pro charges nothing for an own carrier account, which leaves the Pro fee as your only fixed cost.
Postage is the bigger number
Postage decides most of the bill, and neither vendor's rates page shows a per-parcel dollar figure you can match line by line. Pirate Ship links a 2026 USPS rate sheet and says its discounts range from 0% on USPS Media Mail to 88% on USPS Priority Mail. Shippo's pricing page lists discounted labels for four carriers but no discount percentage. Run your most common parcel through both before you switch, and compare the total instead of the plan fee.
Pirate Ship: no plan to pay for
Pirate Ship says it charges no monthly fees, no label markup and no minimum volume, and that carriers pay it rather than you. Signup needs no credit card. The discounts are the reason to use it, and its rates page lists these maximums. You can read the full profile on Pirate Ship on Toolradar.
| Service | Maximum discount on its rates page |
|---|---|
| USPS Priority Mail | 88% |
| USPS Ground Advantage | 87% |
| UPS Ground | 81% |
| UPS Next Day Air | 75% |
| USPS Priority Mail Express | 14% |
| USPS Media Mail | 0% |
These are ceilings, not averages. A store that mostly ships Media Mail gets no discount on that service, so the free plan pays most for sellers who ship Priority Mail and Ground Advantage.
The trade-off is reach. Pirate Ship names only UPS and USPS, its UPS discounts apply to shipments that start in the United States, and its pages name no store integrations. A customer quote mentions Etsy and eBay, but nothing explains how orders reach the tool. A busy store should confirm that before relying on it. Sellers on eBay can check the eBay seller fees guide for the marketplace side of the bill.
Shippo: free to 30 labels, then a fee
Shippo's Starter plan is free for up to 30 labels a month and one user. It includes discounted USPS, UPS, FedEx and DHL Express labels, unlimited store connections, international shipping, automations, return labels, tracking, reporting and email support. Up to 30 labels, that bundle costs nothing extra, which is why Starter ties Pirate Ship on fees at that volume. Toolradar also keeps a Shippo profile.
Pro costs $17 a month, or $205 a year on the annual option. It raises the cap to 10,000 labels and adds five or more users, AI-estimated delivery dates, branded tracking pages, packing slips, and chat and phone support. Premier is quote only, with unlimited labels and 15 or more users.
Other costs are small and listed. US address validation is included on every plan, while non-US checks cost 9 cents per lookup on Starter, 8 cents on Pro and 6 cents on Premier. Shippo's FAQ names postage, the subscription, optional insurance and optional global address validation as the only costs.
The weak spot is the fixed fee. A store shipping 40 parcels a month pays for Pro whether it uses those features or not. Pirate Ship has no fixed fee at that volume, but its site names only UPS and USPS and its rates page does not list automations.

Which one to pick
- Pirate Ship if you ship only UPS or USPS, mostly inside the United States, and want no fixed cost at any volume.
- Shippo if you need FedEx or DHL Express, automations, return labels or store connections and ship 30 labels a month or fewer, since Starter covers all of them free. Above that cap, or for branded tracking and a team of five or more, you need Pro.
- Either, at 30 labels or fewer. Starter costs nothing, so choose on carriers and features.
Shopify store owners can check Shopify pricing and the Shopify review for the platform side of the bill, and the best ecommerce platforms ranking helps stores still choosing one. If you already use ShipStation, our ShipStation review and ShipStation alternatives guide put ShipStation next to the rest of the field.
The best shipping software ranking covers the wider choice, and the how to start dropshipping guide prices the rest of a new store's setup. Etsy sellers can compare the Etsy seller fees before they add shipping costs.
Where the answer flips
Two numbers decide the cheaper tool: your label volume, and the postage gap between the two tools on your own parcels. Starter covers 30 labels free, so the first label past that cap brings the full Pro fee with it. Spread over 31 labels, that fee is about 55 cents a label, and it drops to 17 cents at 100 labels.
Postage is where the flip happens. The example below is an assumption for illustration, not a published rate. Suppose Shippo's postage on your parcels were 25 cents a label cheaper than Pirate Ship's. At 100 labels that saves $25 a month, which covers the Pro fee with money to spare. If the saving were 10 cents a label, the same 100 labels would save $10 a month and lose on the subscription. You have to measure that gap on your own parcels, because neither vendor publishes it for your mix.
Before you switch
Check four things before you move a store's shipping:
- Carriers. If every parcel goes out by USPS or UPS, Pirate Ship covers the job. FedEx or DHL Express means Shippo.
- Volume against the cap. Starter stops at 30 labels a month. Past that, Shippo needs Pro.
- Store connections. Shippo lists unlimited store connections. Pirate Ship's pages name none, so test how orders reach it. Stores that route orders across several warehouses can compare order management systems first.
- Returns and tracking. Shippo's Starter plan includes return labels, and branded tracking pages come with Pro. Pirate Ship's rates page lists neither.
How we checked
We read Pirate Ship's rates page and homepage, and Shippo's pricing page, on October 10, 2026. Each plan, price, cap and carrier comes from those pages as printed. Subscription figures are our arithmetic: the plan fee divided by label volume. We did not compare postage, because neither rates page gives a per-parcel dollar figure that can be matched line by line. Toolradar's count is the directory's own figure from its shipping and fulfillment ranking as of October 10, 2026.

Which one is cheaper for 100 labels a month?
