Square vs Shopify POS (2026): Which Is Better for Ecommerce Sellers?
Square vs Shopify POS in 2026: Basic is $29/mo yearly, Square Plus is $49/mo. See the full bill at $3,000, $30,000 and $120,000 in monthly sales.

Shopify wins in 2026 when the website is the business: Basic is $29/mo billed yearly, in-person selling is included, and online cards cost 2.9% + 30¢. Square wins when the counter comes first, because Free has no monthly fee and Plus is $49/mo per location. A staffed shop on Shopify adds POS Pro at $89/mo per location, a fee a pop-up can skip.
The free Square plan is the expensive one online. Its card rate on web and invoice payments is 3.3%, four tenths of a point above Basic, so a store that lives on the website can pay the Basic subscription and still come out ahead on cards. The prices below were read on October 17, 2026.
Toolradar data: Toolradar tracks 108 e-commerce platforms as of October 17, 2026, and Shopify drew 414 side-by-side comparisons in the prior 90 days, more than any other platform in that set. In the wider ecommerce catalog of 350 tools, Square is the 13th most-listed alternative. The product pages are Shopify and Shopify POS.
Which system fits an ecommerce seller?
Square is a payments company that includes a point of sale and a website builder, so the catalog and the card rate sit with the processor. Shopify is a hosted store that includes a point of sale, so the catalog sits with the storefront. An ecommerce seller is choosing which catalog is the source of truth, then paying that processor's rate. Getting the catalog wrong means paying to run two.
| Question | Square | Shopify POS | Better fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Software to open | Free has no monthly fee. Plus is $49/mo per location | Basic is $29/mo billed yearly. POS Pro is $89/mo per location | Square, if the counter is the main channel |
| Online US card | 3.3% on Free, 2.9% on Plus and Premium, each plus 30¢ | 2.9% on Basic, 2.7% on Grow, each plus 30¢ | Shopify, until you pay for Plus |
| In-person US card | 2.6% on Free and 2.5% on Plus, each plus 15¢ | 2.6% on Basic and 2.5% on Grow, each plus 10¢ | Shopify, by 5¢ on each sale at the matched plan |
| Website you can grow | Website builder, SEO tools, and free hosting on every plan | Hosted store, checkout, and the app ecosystem on every paid plan | Shopify |
| Staffed retail tools | Staff management and loyalty on Plus | Exchanges, pickup fulfillment, and unlimited POS staff on Pro | Whichever feature you will use weekly |
Stay on Shopify if the store already runs there, or if you need apps, markets, and checkout you can extend, because moving the catalog costs more than the register gap. Move to Square if most money is taken at a counter and the site is a catalog with shipping, pickup, and local delivery. The Shopify review covers the store product, and the Square POS review covers the register on its own.
How much does each stack cost per month?
The bill below is one location, standard US cards, and Shopify on yearly billing, with online orders averaging $50 and in-person tickets averaging $40. Online dollars are twice the in-person dollars, and apps, themes, domains, hardware, tax, labels, and gift cards are left out. Each total is the software fee, plus the percentage, plus the per-sale cents.
| Monthly sales | Shopify Basic | Shopify Grow | Square Free | Square Plus |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $3,000 ($2,000 online, 40 orders; $1,000 in person, 25 tickets) | $127.50 | $172.50 | $107.75 | $147.75 |
| $30,000 ($20,000 online, 400 orders; $10,000 in person, 250 tickets) | $1,014 | $1,014 | $1,077.50 | $1,036.50 |
| $120,000 ($80,000 online, 1,600 orders; $40,000 in person, 1,000 tickets) | $3,969 | $3,819 | $4,310 | $3,999 |
At the small mix, Square Free is the lowest bill, $19.75 under Basic, the only volume here where a thin website should open on Free.
At the middle mix, Basic and Grow tie at $1,014, because Grow's lower rates save exactly the extra $50 in software ($79 minus the Basic fee) at this volume. Square Plus is $22.50 above that tie, and Square Free is $63.50 above it, which means the free online rate already costs more than the subscription.
At the large mix, Grow is the lowest of the four at $3,819. Square Plus is $180 higher, and Square Free is $491 higher, the cost of a counter plan once the website is the business.
POS Pro is not in those columns, so add $89 per location when the counter needs the Pro set. A founder can skip that fee, and a staffed shop cannot.
That makes Basic plus Pro $1,103 at the middle mix, the same total as Grow plus Pro. At the large mix, Grow plus Pro is $3,908, which is $91 under Square Plus, so a staffed Shopify shop still beats Plus. Advanced, at $299/mo billed yearly, is still $20 above Grow at that large mix, so the rate cut has not paid for the jump.
Monthly billing raises the Shopify software line: Basic is $39/mo, Grow is $105/mo, and Advanced is $399/mo. The card rates do not change with the billing term. Square's published plan fees are monthly per location, and Plus and Premium include a 30-day trial. The plan-by-plan store fees, separate from this register comparison, are in the Shopify pricing guide.
Shopify's pricing page also offers 3 days free, then $1/mo for 3 months, and the tables use the standard yearly rates because that offer ends. Shopify lists an earn-1%-back credit, capped at $5,000 on Basic, $7,500 on Grow, and $10,000 on Advanced. The tables leave that credit out, because it is a reward with its own terms, not a lower card rate.
What does one card sale cost?
Software is a flat line and the percentage is what scales, so one sale shows the gap with no plan fee attached. The figures are the card fee only, so they understate paid plans.
| Channel and plan | Fee on a $100 sale | You keep |
|---|---|---|
| Online, Shopify Basic | $3.20 | $96.80 |
| Online, Shopify Grow | $3.00 | $97.00 |
| Online, Square Free | $3.60 | $96.40 |
| Online, Square Plus or Premium | $3.20 | $96.80 |
| In person, Shopify Basic | $2.70 | $97.30 |
| In person, Shopify Grow | $2.60 | $97.40 |
| In person, Square Free | $2.75 | $97.25 |
| In person, Square Plus | $2.65 | $97.35 |
| In person, Square Premium | $2.55 | $97.45 |
Online, Plus matches Basic at $3.20, and Free costs 40¢ more, so Plus catches Shopify online and does not beat it. In person, Basic beats Free by 5¢, because both charge 2.6% and the fixed portion is 10¢ on Shopify against 15¢ on Square. On a $40 ticket, Basic and Plus are 1¢ apart, so the register rate should not decide the plan.
Two fees sit outside that table: cards issued outside the United States add 1.5% on every Square plan, and Shopify adds 1% on top of the online rate, so a foreign card costs more than the columns. A keyed or card-on-file payment is 3.5% + 15¢ on every Square plan, and Shopify's in-person manual rate is 3.5% + 10¢ on Basic, Grow, and Advanced. Cash and checks are free on Square, so leave them out of the card comparison.
Where the free Square plan stops winning
Compare Free with Basic on online sales alone, with no in-person tickets and no POS Pro. Free charges 0.4 points more and the same per-order cents. That extra 0.4% equals the Basic fee once online sales hit $7,250 in a month. Below that, Free is cheaper if the website is Square's. Above it, Basic is cheaper even before you count the 5¢ Shopify saves on each in-person tap.
Compare Plus with Free the same way, online only. Plus costs $49/mo and cuts the online rate to the percentage Basic already charges, with the same per-order cents, so you pay to match Shopify, not to beat it. The rate gap covers the fee at $12,250 a month in online sales.
In person, Plus also cuts 0.1 point, from 2.6% to 2.5%, and the fixed cents do not change. That saving is too small to upgrade for the counter alone. Under the 2-to-1 mix used in the table, both gaps together cover the Plus fee at $5,444.44 in person and $10,888.89 online, which is $16,333.33 combined. That sits between the small mix, where Free wins, and the middle mix, where Plus wins.
Premium is a different purchase: the online rate matches Plus, so the extra software, $149/mo against the Plus fee, buys a 0.1 point in-person cut, advanced reporting, no gift-card load fee, and 24/7 phone support. The rate cut alone covers that extra software at $100,000 a month in card-present sales. Below that, Premium is a features decision, not a rate decision. Square also says sellers processing over $250,000 a year can ask about custom pricing.
What you give up if you skip POS Pro
Casual in-person selling is included on every paid Shopify plan, enough for a founder at a market stall. Shopify's POS subscription guide marks a second list as Pro only: custom printed receipts, automatic discounts, retail staff permissions, unlimited POS-only staff, exchanges, order cancellations, saved carts, and in-app retail analytics. The same guide marks pickup in store, local delivery fulfillment, and ship to home as Pro features of the POS app, so a shop that hands the bag over from the register needs the add-on. Counting stock, receiving transfers, and daily sales reports sit on that Pro list too.
Refunds, manual discounts, gift cards, barcode scanning with the camera, and changing a quantity are on the included list, so a pop-up can ring a sale without Pro and a store that exchanges items cannot.
Square draws the line in a different place: the online store page puts pickup, local delivery, and shipping on the free tier, along with a website builder, SEO tools, free hosting, and a free SSL certificate, so shipping is not a reason to buy Plus. The same page says you can list unlimited items. Real-time shipping rates, advanced reporting, and 24/7 support are on Premium. Expanded site customization, QR-code ordering, and subscriptions are on Plus, which is also where the POS pricing page puts staff management and loyalty rewards, so employees plus a loyalty card are the Plus buyer.
Phone support is a weak reason to upgrade: Square Free includes it from 6am to 6pm PT on weekdays for the first 90 days, Plus keeps that weekday window, Premium is 24/7 phone support, and Shopify Basic lists 24/7 live chat.
Hardware is a separate bill from the software on both sides. Square's pricing page lists hardware options starting at $59, and it also says you can take in-person payments with no hardware, including Tap to Pay on iPhone and Tap to Pay on Android. Shopify's POS pricing page says a phone or tablet and a card reader are enough to start. A second location does not raise Square Free, while Square Plus, Square Premium, and POS Pro each bill per location, so two staffed shops add a second software line. Shopify Plus includes the first 20 POS Pro locations, and with Shopify Payments that inclusion extends to the first 200.
Should the store and the counter use different systems?
Running Shopify for the website and Square for the counter is usually the costly version of both products, because you keep two catalogs and pay Shopify for another processor. If card payments on the Shopify store go through a provider other than Shopify Payments, Shopify adds a third-party fee: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced, and 0.2% on Plus. That fee stacks on top of Square's own rate.
An online sale that Square Free would charge at 3.3% also owes Shopify's Basic third-party surcharge, which is $5.60 on a $100 order instead of the $3.20 Shopify Payments would take on Basic. A split stack loses on that gap, so one processor on the selling catalog is the cleaner bill.
Square's POS pricing page describes a Thrive Inventory sync that keeps the Square catalog as the source of truth for a Shopify store. Square publishes no fee for that sync, so budget a second catalog workflow until you have a price, and do not assume the two stock counts will match on their own. Sellers who outgrow both native catalogs can compare dedicated stock tools in the inventory management roundup.
Which should you pick?
- The store is already on Shopify, and in-person sales are pop-ups. Stay, because casual POS is included and rebuilding the site costs more than the register fee.
- You are opening a staffed shop and the brand already lives on Shopify. Add POS Pro if you need exchanges, POS pickup fulfillment, or unlimited POS staff.
- You are starting from a counter, and the site is secondary. Use Square Free until combined sales clear the Plus break-even above, then move to Plus, with pickup and shipping already on the free tier.
- Online sales are the whole company and there is no counter. This matchup is the wrong one, because a POS add-on will not fix a store decision. Compare store platforms in Shopify vs WooCommerce, then come back when a physical channel is real.
- Several locations, purchase orders, and a wholesale catalog. Price that depth before you stretch either plan, because neither Free nor Basic is built for purchase orders. The Lightspeed Retail review is the page for that job, and the wider field is the best POS systems ranking.
What to sort out after you choose
The register decision does not cover the rest of the margin. App spend on Shopify is its own bill, which the best Shopify apps roundup sorts by job. Email after the first purchase is covered in email marketing for Shopify, and labels sit in shipping software. Either bill can exceed the gap between these stacks. Checkout drop-off, once the site is live, is the subject of the guide to reducing cart abandonment. Sellers who never take a payment in person should start from the best ecommerce platforms ranking instead of this matchup.
How we compared
We read Shopify's pricing page, Shopify's POS pricing page, Shopify's POS subscription guide, Square's POS pricing page, and Square's online store page on October 17, 2026. The platform count and the 414 comparisons come from Toolradar's ecommerce ranking. Totals are arithmetic from those published rates under the assumptions in the cost section, not a quote from either vendor. Louis Corneloup, founder of Toolradar and Dupple, is the author. Re-check both pricing pages before you sign, because plan fees and card rates move.
FAQ
Is Square or Shopify POS better for ecommerce in 2026?
Shopify is the better fit when the website produces most of the sales, because casual in-person selling is included and Basic is $29/mo billed yearly. Square is the better fit when the counter produces most of the sales: Free has no monthly fee, and Plus at $49/mo per location matches Basic's online rate. A staffed Shopify shop pays the Pro add-on on top, per location.
How much does Shopify POS cost on top of the store plan?
Casual in-person selling is included on Basic, Grow, Advanced, and Plus, so a pop-up does not add a second subscription. POS Pro is an extra $89/mo per location, and Shopify's POS pricing page describes that charge as billed yearly. In-person cards on Grow are 2.5%, a tenth of a point under Basic. Plus, the store plan, starts at $2,300/mo on a three-year term and includes the first 20 POS Pro locations, so a chain should price that plan before it multiplies the add-on.
Is Square POS free if I also sell online?
The software can be free, which is the trap when the website does the selling. Square Free has no monthly fee per location, and the online store page includes a website builder, pickup, local delivery, and shipping. You still pay 3.3% + 30¢ on online and invoice cards, against the lower in-person rate in the comparison table. That online rate is why Free stops being the cheap plan once web sales grow.
When does Square Plus cost less than Square Free?
On online sales alone, Plus costs less once those sales pass $12,250 in a month, because the drop from the free online rate to 2.9% covers the Plus fee and the per-order cents do not change. Under a mix with twice as many online dollars as in-person dollars, and a $40 in-person ticket, the combined break-even is $16,333.33 a month, and below that Free remains the lower bill.
Do I need Shopify POS Pro for a pop-up?
No, a pop-up does not need POS Pro, because event selling on the included set means you take the payment, capture a basic customer, and handle a limited return. You need Pro when staff must exchange an item, fulfill pickup or local delivery from the POS app, count inventory, or use unlimited POS-only logins.
Can I keep Shopify online and use Square at the counter?
You can, and the card math usually argues against it. Shopify charges a third-party fee when payments do not run through Shopify Payments, 2% on Basic, on top of whatever Square charges. Square can sync its catalog to Shopify through Thrive Inventory, and Square publishes no fee for that sync. One processor on one catalog is the cleaner bill.
