Recharge Review 2026: Pricing, Pros, Cons and Alternatives
Recharge's plans and fees at a real subscription volume, where it earns its price, where cheaper apps beat it, and four alternatives checked in October 2026.
Short answer: Recharge is worth it for a Shopify subscription brand that will use its retention tools, but it is not the cheapest option. Starter costs a monthly fee plus 1.49% and 19 cents per transaction, with a 60-day free trial. At $60,000 a month in subscription sales, that comes to about $1,183 a month, nearly double Bold's Scale plan. The gap is roughly $570 a month, so the failed-payment and cancellation tools have to bring in more than that in extra subscription revenue to justify it.
Key factsBest for: Shopify subscription brands with large renewal volume that…
- Subscription billing and retention tools priced as a monthly base plus a fee on every order, with a 60-day Starter trial.
- Starter: Monthly plan plus 1.49% and 19 cents per transaction
- Free trial: 60 days on Starter, no fees charged during it
- Plus term: 12 months
- Toolradar reviews: 83 tracked, averaging 4.4 out of 5
Pros
- Starter includes failed payment recovery, cancellation prevention and win-back tools on a monthly plan.
- No fees are charged during the 60-day Starter trial, so you can test the tools on live subscribers first.
- Plus adds Concierge SMS, loyalty rewards, referrals and the JavaScript SDK for custom storefronts.
Cons
- At the scenario volume, Starter costs about 2% of subscription revenue, nearly double Bold Scale.
- Plus and Custom need a 12-month term, which removes the exit if the extra features go unused.
- Concierge SMS, loyalty, referrals and bundles are missing from Starter, so the entry plan is narrower than its headline price suggests.
Subscriptions repeat the same sale every month, so a small leak in renewals costs real money. Recharge is built to plug those leaks. Starter includes failed payment recovery, cancellation prevention and win-back tools, and its fees come per order rather than per seat.
That structure is why the real question is not whether Recharge works, but whether the bill pays back at your volume.
This review answers the buyer's question directly: is Recharge worth it, and what does it really cost?
It covers Recharge's current plans, the fee math at real subscription volumes, the trial and term rules, where Recharge is the wrong pick, and four alternatives from our September subscription roundup.
Toolradar data: Toolradar tracks 83 reviews of Recharge across G2 and Capterra, averaging 4.4 out of 5 as of September 2026.
Methodology. Every price on this page was checked on 10 October 2026 on the vendor's own pricing page.
Scenarios apply each published percentage to the order value and each per-order fee to every order, with a $60 average order as our assumption. The vendor pages do not say whether tax and shipping sit in the base, so the math uses the order value. Ordergroove publishes no list price, so it stays out of the cost ranking.
What is Recharge?
Recharge is a subscription billing and retention app for ecommerce brands. It handles the recurring part of the sale: the card charged each cycle, the customer who wants to skip, swap or cancel, and the tools that try to stop a renewal from lapsing.
On Toolradar, it is filed under subscription billing, ecommerce, payment processing and marketing.
The product comes in three plans. Starter is for emerging brands launching a subscription program.
Plus is for scaling brands that want SMS, loyalty rewards and hands-on migration. Custom is a volume-based contract for high-volume brands, quoted by sales and set on a 12-month term.
How Recharge works
Install the app and the 60-day Starter trial starts that day, with no fees charged during the trial. Recharge then adds a subscription widget to your product pages, a customer portal where buyers manage their own deliveries, and automated workflows for failed payments, cancellations and win-backs.
It runs alongside a Shopify store, so the store's own plan is a separate bill, covered in our Shopify pricing guide.
The fee structure is what changes the day-to-day economics.
Starter takes 1.49% plus 19 cents on every transaction, Plus takes 1.34% plus 19 cents, and the monthly fee comes on top. Starter leaves out Concierge SMS, loyalty rewards, referrals, bundles and the JavaScript SDK and Storefront API.
Plus adds those, along with hands-on implementation and migration support, and it moves you onto a 12-month term.
Recharge key features
Recharge pricing
Recharge publishes two plans with prices and one quote-only tier. Starter is $99 a month plus 1.49% and 19 cents per transaction, billed monthly, with a 60-day free trial. Plus costs more each month, at 1.34% and 19 cents per transaction on a 12-month term.
Custom is volume-based and needs a sales call. Figures come from Recharge's pricing page, checked on 10 October 2026.
At $60,000 a month in subscription sales, made up of 1,000 orders at $60, Starter costs about $1,183: the monthly base, $894 in percentage fees and $190 in per-transaction charges.
Plus costs about $1,493.
Plus only pays off above about $267,000 a month in subscription sales, because its rate is 0.15 points lower but its base is $400 higher, and that saving has to cover the gap.
Against the alternatives at the same volume, Bold Subscriptions Scale is the lowest cost at about $615 a month ($74.99 plus 0.9%), with Grow at about $650.
Skio Scale billed yearly comes to about $1,299, and Stay AI Pro to about $1,289. Bold Launch costs about $1,225 here because its 2% fee is steep.
At the same order size, Bold Launch is cheaper than Starter below about $38,300 a month, since its $24.99 base beats Starter's monthly fee. Above that, Starter wins.

Recharge pros and cons
What we like
- Starter includes failed payment recovery, cancellation prevention and win-back tools on a monthly plan.
- No fees are charged during the 60-day Starter trial, so you can test the tools on live subscribers first.
- Plus adds Concierge SMS, loyalty rewards, referrals and the JavaScript SDK for custom storefronts.
What could be better
- At the scenario volume, Starter costs about 2% of subscription revenue, nearly double Bold Scale.
- Plus and Custom need a 12-month term, which removes the exit if the extra features go unused.
- Concierge SMS, loyalty, referrals and bundles are missing from Starter, so the entry plan is narrower than its headline price suggests.
Who Recharge is for
Recharge fits a Shopify subscription brand with real renewal volume and a plan to use the retention tools. At $60,000 a month in subscription sales, the premium over Bold Scale is about $570 a month, or roughly $6,800 a year.
Starter covers that gap if its recovery and cancellation tools bring in about nine or ten extra subscription orders a month at that order size. That counts revenue, not margin, so the real break-even is higher.
Run that test on your own numbers before you sign, because the extra orders are an estimate, not a promise.
Plus fits brands that need SMS, loyalty or the JavaScript SDK enough to pay $400 a month more and commit to 12 months.
A smaller store should compare Bold Launch first, because below about $38,300 a month at that order size, it costs less than Starter. Teams that only need scheduling and a customer portal will pay for features they never switch on.
If loyalty is the reason for Plus, compare standalone programs in our loyalty software guide before paying the step up.
For the platform side of the bill, read our Shopify review, and if cancellations will flood your inbox, compare helpdesks in our Gorgias review.

The bottom line
Recharge is worth it for a Shopify subscription brand that will use its retention tools and has the volume to cover the premium. On price alone, Starter is cheaper for any subscription volume below about $267,000 a month, the point where Plus's 0.15-point rate saving covers its $400 monthly step.
Buy Recharge when failed-payment recovery and cancellation tools are the reason you need a subscription app, and check the numbers at your own order size before you sign.
Skip it if you only need scheduling, or if your subscription sales are small enough that a lower base fee matters more than the extra features.
