TL;DR

Short answer: Klaviyo if you want email flows on a free plan of 250 active profiles and 500 sends a month, Shopify Messaging if sending volume matters more, with 10,000 free emails a month, and Judge.me for reviews, where the free plan has no review cap. Every other free plan here stops at a number too: 50 billable conversations on Tidio, 200 orders a month on Smile.io, 2,000 orders on Upsell.

Free Shopify apps are worth installing when the free plan covers the job you need done this month. Most of them stop covering it at a specific number, and that number is the real price.

This page compares eight apps on what their free plan includes, where it stops, and the first paid step after it.

Toolradar data: 57 of the 106 email marketing tools we rank (54%) have a free plan, as of October 2026 on Toolradar's email marketing ranking.

Our own newsletters are sent on beehiiv, which is not one of the apps here.

Methodology: we read each vendor's own pricing page in October 2026, the Shopify App Store listing for Shopify Inbox, and Toolradar's email ranking, and counted only the limits the vendor states.

We did not install or test these apps in a store, so the picks rest on published limits, not on usage.

If SMS is your next job, see our SMS apps ranking.

If you buy stock through suppliers, our dropshipping apps ranking covers the sourcing side.

What it is

A free Shopify app, for this page, is one whose plan costs nothing every month and stays that way without a trial clock. That rules out 14-day trials and one-time credits. Replo's offer is 1,000 credits that run out once, so it does not qualify.

Read the limit that forces an upgrade before you read the word free. Your Shopify plan fee is a separate bill, covered in our Shopify pricing guide and the Shopify review.

Why it matters

A free plan is a test budget, and its limit tells you what the test costs. A store with 300 active profiles is already past Klaviyo's 250-profile free cap. The same list receiving four weekly sends uses 1,200 emails, which fits inside Shopify Messaging's 10,000 free emails a month.

Choose the app whose limit you will hit last, and read the paid stack page once you outgrow the free tier.

Key features to look for

The cap that ends the plan
Most free plans here have one number that stops them or pushes you to paid. Judge.me is the exception. Find that number on the vendor's own pricing page before you trust a plan.
What the free tier includes
Some free plans keep the full feature set and limit only volume. Omnisend's FAQ says the only limits on its free plan are 250 contacts, 500 emails and 500 web push messages a month.
Monthly versus one-time
Credits and trials are not free plans. Tidio's first 50 Lyro AI conversations are a lifetime allowance, separate from its monthly billable conversations, and Replo's 1,000 credits are one-time.
Billing basis
The same paid price can mean different billing terms. Omnisend offers a three-month upfront option at 30% off, and Upsell's pricing page lists Scale as both monthly and annual-only.

Pricing

All eight apps have a plan that costs nothing each month.

Judge.me's free plan has no review cap, while the others stop at a number: Klaviyo at 250 active profiles and 500 sends, Omnisend at 250 contacts and 500 emails, and Smile.io at 200 orders a month.

Read the cap before the price, because the cap decides when the price starts. For the paid math on Klaviyo, see our Klaviyo pricing guide.

The paid step after free varies widely. Judge.me's Awesome and Smile.io's Essential sit at the low end of the paid plans here, and Smile.io's Standard is $79 a month.

Tidio starts at $24.17 a month, and DSers Advanced at $19.90 a month.

Upsell's free Growth plan ends at 2,000 orders or upsell revenue, whichever is higher, and Scale starts at $299 a month.

Shopify Messaging charges $1 per 1,000 emails above its 10,000 free allowance, and SMS is billed separately.

Klaviyo's paid plans have no flat price on its pricing page, so their cost grows with profile count. Prices checked on vendor pricing pages in October 2026.

Mistakes to avoid
×Treating a free plan as a budget. Each limit ends at a number, such as 250 profiles on Klaviyo or 50 billable conversations on Tidio. Plan for the month that number ends, not the month you install.
×Counting one-time credits as a free plan. Replo's 1,000 credits are used once, so the allowance runs out with no monthly fallback.
×Missing the cap that counts. Smile.io counts monthly orders, and Upsell counts whichever is higher of its orders or upsell revenue. A strong December can cross either cap in one month.
×Running two email tools on free plans. Splitting one list across Klaviyo and Shopify Messaging doubles the sync work and hides which flow actually earns.
Expert tips
→Pick the email app by list size, then check its limit against your send schedule. Four weekly sends to 300 people is 1,200 emails, which rules out Klaviyo's free plan and fits Shopify Messaging's allowance.
→Read the upgrade trigger on the vendor's own pricing page before you install.
→Keep the free plans that match a job you already do, and uninstall the rest. Each app adds storefront code, even on a free plan.
→Check page speed after each install, because a free app still adds code to every page it touches.

The bottom line

Start with Klaviyo if email is your first job and your list stays under 250 active profiles, or Shopify Messaging if sending volume matters more than flows. Add Judge.me for reviews, since its free plan has no review cap.

Before you install anything else, find the limit on each free plan, if it has one, and work out the month you would hit it. If support is the bigger job, read our Gorgias review.
