TL;DR

Smile.io is worth it for a Shopify or BigCommerce store that wants points and referrals at the lowest published price, and it gets expensive the moment you want VIP tiers. The free plan covers 200 monthly orders, Essential costs $15 a month for 500, Standard $79 for 1,000 and Growth $199 for 2,500. Smile Plus is $999 a month billed annually for 7,500 orders, and Enterprise is a quote. VIP tiers start on Growth, so a 500-order store that wants them pays about 13 times the Essential price, while Rivo's Scale plan includes VIP tiers from $49 a month.

Smile.io prices loyalty by the number of orders your store takes each month, and that single meter decides whether it is a bargain or an overpay. A store that needs points, referrals and a branded rewards panel gets one of the cheapest paid loyalty plans on the market.

A store that wants a tiered VIP program is pushed to a plan priced for a much bigger business.

This review is for Shopify and BigCommerce merchants choosing a first loyalty app or reconsidering one at renewal. It reads Smile.io's own pricing page and each competitor's pricing page, and it computes the yearly bill at several order volumes.

It is a pricing and plan read, not a hands-on test of the app. Methodology: list prices only, read on vendor pricing pages on October 17, 2026, with yearly totals computed from the monthly price.

Toolradar data: Toolradar, the software directory we run, evaluated 38 loyalty program tools for its loyalty programs ranking, and as of October 2026 Smile.io is listed as an alternative to 26 of them, second only to Toast POS.

Its Essential plan ties for the second-lowest paid entry price among the loyalty tools Toolradar tracks with a published price.

What is Smile.io?

Smile.io is a loyalty and rewards app for ecommerce stores. It runs points programs, referral programs and, on its higher plans, VIP tiers, all shown to shoppers in an on-site rewards panel and a dedicated loyalty page. It installs on Shopify and BigCommerce only, which the pricing page FAQ states plainly, so a WooCommerce or Wix store needs another tool.

In-store selling is covered only through Shopify POS: customers can earn and redeem points at the counter on any plan, and the FAQ says other POS systems are not supported. A store that runs a different register, such as Square or Lightspeed, should treat that as a hard limit.

Billing is in US dollars wherever the business is based. For how Smile.io sits against the rest of the field, start with our best loyalty program software ranking.

How Smile.io works

Every Smile.io plan carries a monthly order cap, and the cap, not features, is what usually forces an upgrade. The FAQ defines monthly orders by calendar month and counts every order placed in that month, paid, unpaid or refunded.

A store with a high return rate or many abandoned draft orders should size its plan on gross orders, not on net sales.

Below Growth, the comparison table marks additional orders as not included, so a store that outgrows Essential or Standard should plan on moving up a tier rather than paying a top-up. Growth and Smile Plus do sell extra capacity: Growth adds orders at $20 per 100, and Smile Plus at $5 per 100. That makes the top two plans flexible for seasonal peaks and the lower three rigid.

Features stack plan by plan. The free plan already includes points, referrals, full branding customization, multi-language support and Shopify POS. Essential adds free product rewards, a dedicated loyalty page, nudges, an analytics page, one integration and the option to send all emails through Klaviyo.

Standard adds subscription and gift card rewards, a second integration and an order thank-you page. Growth adds the VIP program, points expiration, the Loyalty Hub, benchmarks and unlimited integrations. Smile Plus adds a migration and launch plan, quarterly program monitoring, priority support and API access.

The practical reading: a small store weighs Free against Essential on the Klaviyo email option and the loyalty page, while the move to Growth comes either from wanting VIP tiers or from passing the Standard order cap.

Essential can send all loyalty emails through Klaviyo and includes one integration, Standard two, Growth and above unlimited.
Shopify POS on every plan
Shoppers earn and redeem points in store through Shopify POS on any plan, including Free. No other point-of-sale system is supported.

Smile.io pricing

Smile.io publishes six plans. Free covers 200 monthly orders, Essential 500, Standard 1,000 and Growth 2,500, all billed monthly. Smile Plus covers 7,500 orders and is billed annually; Enterprise has unlimited orders on a custom quote. Prices are in US dollars, read on Smile.io pricing on October 17, 2026.

Retailpresso data: we computed the yearly bill at each cap from the monthly list price. Essential comes to $180 a year, Standard $948 and Growth $2,388. Smile Plus is $11,988 a year, since it is billed annually. The jump from Standard to Growth is the steep one: $1,440 more a year for 1,500 more orders and the VIP program.

Overage changes the math for stores between plans. A store at 3,500 monthly orders on Growth buys 10 blocks of 100 extra orders, which comes to $399 a month. Growth plus overage costs the same as Smile Plus at 6,500 monthly orders, so a store that sits above that level all year is better off on the annual plan, and a store that only touches it in November and December is better off paying overage in those months.

Competitors price the same jobs differently. Rivo's Scale plan starts at $49 a month for 200 to 2,500 orders and includes VIP tiers on every plan, with a 7-day trial (Rivo pricing). LoyaltyLion's Classic plan costs the same as Smile's Growth for only 500 orders and leaves VIP tiers to its custom-priced Advanced plan (LoyaltyLion pricing). Yotpo's Loyalty and Referrals has a free plan, and its paid tiers start at that same Growth price point (Yotpo pricing). Okendo sells loyalty only through sales, by order tier (Okendo pricing).

Smile.io pros and cons

What we like

  • The free plan covers 200 monthly orders with points, referrals and full branding customization.
  • Essential sends loyalty emails through Klaviyo and adds a dedicated loyalty page and nudges.
  • Growth and Smile Plus sell extra orders in blocks of 100, which absorbs seasonal peaks.

What could be better

  • VIP tiers and points expiration start only on Growth, 2,500-order capacity a small store does not need.
  • Order caps count unpaid and refunded orders, and plans below Growth sell no extra orders.
  • Installs on Shopify and BigCommerce only, and in-store support is limited to Shopify POS.

Who Smile.io is for

Smile.io fits a Shopify or BigCommerce store under 1,000 monthly orders that wants points and referrals without a VIP ladder. At that size Essential or Standard is among the cheapest paid loyalty plans with published prices, and the free plan lets a store under 200 orders launch before paying anything. Stores that already send email through Klaviyo get the integration from Essential up, which matters if you want loyalty balances inside your existing flows; our Klaviyo pricing guide covers that side of the bill.

It is a weaker fit for a store that wants tiered VIP status early. Growth is the first plan with VIP tiers, so a 500-order store pays the Growth price for capacity it does not use. Rivo includes VIP tiers from its entry plan, and the cheapest loyalty program software comparison prices the other low-cost options. Stores that want reviews and loyalty under one contract should read our Yotpo review first.

Smile.io is also out for any store off Shopify and BigCommerce, and for omnichannel retailers whose registers are not Shopify POS. If the platform itself is still undecided, compare Shopify pricing with BigCommerce pricing before choosing apps.

The bottom line

Smile.io is worth it for a Shopify or BigCommerce store under 1,000 monthly orders that wants points and referrals, and overpriced for a small store that wants VIP tiers. Essential and Standard are among the cheapest published loyalty plans, and the free plan is a real launch option below 200 orders. Once VIP tiers are the goal, price Rivo first, and once orders pass 6,500 a month all year, compare Smile Plus against Growth plus overage.

Our Smile.io profile on Toolradar, the LoyaltyLion profile and the loyalty programs ranking hold the category counts used above. For the wider app stack, see best Shopify apps and best email marketing for Shopify.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Smile.io cost?

Smile.io has a free plan for up to 200 monthly orders. Essential costs $15 a month for 500 orders, Standard $79 for 1,000 and Growth $199 for 2,500, billed monthly. Smile Plus costs $999 a month billed annually for 7,500 orders, and Enterprise is a custom quote. Verified on Smile.io's pricing page, October 2026.

Does Smile.io have a free plan?

Yes. The free plan covers up to 200 monthly orders and includes points, referrals, full branding customization, multi-language support and Shopify POS. It does not include VIP tiers, which start on the Growth plan.

Which Smile.io plan includes VIP tiers?

Growth is the first plan with the VIP program, along with points expiration and the Loyalty Hub. Free, Essential and Standard do not include VIP tiers, so a store that wants a tiered program has to budget for Growth or a higher plan.

What happens if I go over my Smile.io order limit?

On Growth and Smile Plus you buy extra orders in blocks of 100, at a lower rate on Smile Plus. The comparison table marks additional orders as not included on Free, Essential and Standard, so a store that outgrows those caps should plan to move up a tier. Every order counts toward the cap, including unpaid and refunded orders.

Is Smile.io better than LoyaltyLion?

On published price for a small store, yes. Smile.io's Essential plan covers 500 monthly orders for a fraction of LoyaltyLion's Classic plan at the same volume, and neither includes VIP tiers at that level. LoyaltyLion's case is onboarding and Klaviyo depth on its higher, custom-priced plans, and its free plan for stores up to 400 orders.

Does Smile.io work outside Shopify?

Only on BigCommerce. The pricing page FAQ says Smile is available on Shopify and BigCommerce, and in-store earning and redemption works only through Shopify POS. Stores on other platforms or registers need a different loyalty tool.
