Pirate Ship Review

The free USPS and UPS account, the 2026 postage add-ons, and the software bill at 100 labels against Shippo, Stamps.com, ShipStation, and ShippingEasy.

TL;DR

Pirate Ship is worth it in 2026 if your parcels go by USPS or UPS and you want the software line at $0. There is no monthly fee, no label markup, and no minimum volume, though you still pay postage. At 100 labels a month, Shippo's first paid band is $19 on monthly billing, while Pirate Ship stays free.

FedEx and DHL Express are not offered, so an express catalog needs a second account. Media Mail shows a 0% maximum discount, so a book shipment gets no break off the counter price, and UPS Ground Saver has no published discount. Price Stamps.com, ShipStation, or ShippingEasy when you need stamps, an order queue, or FedEx.

A free label tool is the cheap choice only when the postage does not give the savings back to a paid rival. Pirate Ship bets the other way: the account costs nothing, and the bill is the postage. For a store packing its own boxes, that is the whole question in 2026.

Toolradar data: Pirate Ship is listed as an alternative to 4 of the 46 shipping and fulfillment tools on Toolradar's shipping and fulfillment ranking, as of October 2026, which ties the median in that set. Profiles for Pirate Ship, Shippo, and ShipStation are in the same directory. The category table is on the shipping and fulfillment statistics page.

Methodology: every price below was read on October 17, 2026 from the vendor page linked in the pricing section. The 100-label year totals are our arithmetic on monthly software fees, not a rate any carrier will lock in. Postage is left out because none of these pages prints one parcel price you can line up. The postage gap versus Shippo is in Pirate Ship vs Shippo. How Retailpresso weighs a review is on how we rate.

What is Pirate Ship?

Pirate Ship is a free web app for buying USPS and UPS labels, and it has been helping people ship since 2014. The carriers pay for the software, so there is no higher plan to grow into. It does not store inventory or pack boxes, so you still run the bench.

USPS postage on the account sits below the counter price, and that gap is what has to beat a rival's software bill. Retail is the post office and USPS.com price, Commercial Pricing sits under that, and Connect eCommerce, offered since 2022, prices under Commercial Pricing. A normal parcel can beat the counter, while Media Mail has no discount, so books and media pay the counter price.

That makes Pirate Ship a label counter, not an order system. It will not replace a queue across Amazon, a warehouse, and a returns portal. If the parcel has to move on FedEx or DHL Express, the Shippo review is the closer read, because those carriers are on Shippo's free plan and they are absent here.

How Pirate Ship works

Signup does not ask for a credit card, so you can price a real box before any subscription does. The Shopify app pulls Unfulfilled orders, buys the label, marks the order Fulfilled, and writes tracking back, so the store stays in step with the label. The app has to stay installed or new orders stop importing, and you can filter financial statuses so a refunded order never reaches the ship list.

A spreadsheet covers every other channel, so a marketplace shop can use this account without a native app per site. CSV, ODS, XLS, and XLSX all upload with any column titles, as long as name, street, city, state, and ZIP are separate columns. Weight, box size, and up to three corner fields can come along, and batches are not capped, so a sale day is not cut off.

You compare USPS and UPS, pick a service, and print, and presets store a parcel you ship often. Ground Advantage is quoted at the cheaper of its weight price and its cubic price, so a dense small parcel takes the lower quote. Help is chat and email, with no phone line, so skip this account if a failed label means you will call someone.

Pirate Ship key features

USPS and UPS rates with no software feeEssential
The USPS and UPS price is passed through, so a heavier month does not push you onto a higher plan.
Connect eCommerce and Priority Mail CubicEssential
Connect eCommerce prices under USPS Commercial Pricing and has been on the account since 2022, so you do not pay extra to reach it. Priority Mail Cubic is dimension-rated, and a small parcel can go up to 20 pounds without an added weight charge. On July 12, 2026 the cubic length cap rose from 18 inches to 22, so more boxes stay on the cubic price.
UPS Ground without three common surchargesEssential
Pirate Ship is a UPS-certified provider, and Ground labels bought there avoid fuel, residential, and Saturday delivery surcharges, so a home delivery does not pick up those extras. UPS Ground Saver is the exception: you request a quote, and that service cannot be budgeted from the page.
Shopify import and spreadsheet batches
Unfulfilled Shopify orders import, ship, and return as Fulfilled with tracking, so the store and the label stay on one order. A spreadsheet of CSV, ODS, XLS, or XLSX turns a marketplace export into labels without its own app, and batch size is not limited.
USPS versus UPS on one screen
You compare UPS and USPS on one screen and take the cheaper or the faster service. Ground Advantage shows the lower of its weight price and its cubic price, and the comparison never leaves those two carriers.
Chat and email, 14 hours a day
Support is chat and email for 14 hours a day, 10 a.m. to midnight Eastern, seven days a week except a few national holidays, so a late packing shift can still reach a person. There is no phone line, which rules out a team that escalates by calling.

Pirate Ship pricing

Pirate Ship does not sell a plan, and the rates page prices the account as free at every volume, so a bigger month never creates a software bill. What changes the postage is the maximum discount versus retail, and those ceilings are not the rate on every box. Treat the ceiling as a best case, not as the quote on your next carton.

Priority Mail and Priority Mail Cubic list 88%, a maximum you cannot book ahead. Ground Advantage and its cubic rate list 87%, while the weight-based Ground Advantage rate lists 59%, so a dense small box can beat the same service billed by weight. UPS Ground lists 81% off Daily Rates, and that headline does not cover Ground Saver, which publishes no discount.

Priority Mail Flat Rate lists 29% and Priority Mail Express lists 14%, so a flat price or a deadline gives back less of the counter rate than those cubic ceilings. Media Mail lists 0%, so a book shipment does not share them. Simple Export Rate, which Pirate Ship calls exclusive, lists 63%, the international ceiling when the parcel leaves on that product.

Two 2026 USPS changes sit on that postage and move the bill even when the software costs nothing. From April 26, 2026 through January 17, 2027, Ground Advantage, Priority Mail, Priority Mail Cubic, and Priority Mail Express are up 8%, and Media Mail is excluded, so a media shipment skips the bump. In that window a Flat Rate Envelope is up $0.72 and a Large Flat Rate Box is up $2.06, which is small on the envelope and real on the large box.

From July 12, 2026, domestic signature confirmation is $4.15, up from $3.95, while adult signature confirmation stays $9.70, so only the standard add-on got more expensive. The dimensional divisor fell from 166 to 139, so a light, bulky box is more often billed on size. A package over 70 pounds, or 130 inches in length plus girth, draws a $200 fee, and Pirate Ship will not sell a label that large, so you pay it for a bad measurement. An undeclared hazardous material, including a lithium-ion battery, draws $50, so read the April increase and the July rule changes before a rural or oversized route.

The paid tools charge for software around that postage, which is the bill this account does not send. On Shippo's pricing page, Starter is free up to 30 labels, so under that cap you pay for carriers rather than a seat. The Pro card opens at $17 a month, labeled 10% off at $205 for the year, which is yearly billing for 1 to 200 labels, and the monthly price for that band is the first Pro row in the table.

Later monthly bands are $29 for 201 to 500 labels, $54 for 501 to 1,000, $79 for 1,001 to 2,500, $139 for 2,501 to 5,000, and $199 on the highest monthly row in the table. Past that row, Pro adds $0.08 a label and Premier says Contact us, so the seat keeps stepping as volume climbs. Your own carrier account is 5 cents a label on Starter and free on Pro, which is why a negotiated rate belongs on the paid plan.

Stamps.com Basic allows 10 shipping labels, 25 stamps, and 1 user, so a shop that prints stamps will outgrow it in a busy week. Professional adds unlimited labels and stamps, plus live chat and phone, which is the plan that removes the cap. Multi-Location is the two-location plan in the table, and a 30-day risk-free trial lets you test the meter before the subscription sticks.

ShippingEasy is free up to 25 shipments, then Growth is $19.99 a month for 26 to 200. Plus is $49.99 for 501 to 1,500 shipments, Select is $69.99, Premium is $119.99, and Enterprise is $189.99 up to 10,000, so the ladder does not flatten after Growth.

ShipStation prices Starter by volume, with the user count in the table. The annual price on the matching Starter tier is $287.90, the yearly software bill at this comparison volume. The ShipStation review covers Premium, which sits far above a label-only tool.

At 100 labels a month, our arithmetic on the monthly rates is $228 a year on Shippo at $19 a month and $239.88 on ShippingEasy Growth. Stamps.com Professional and ShipStation's Starter tier at that same volume come to $359.88, both listed at $29.99 a month. Pirate Ship's software line for that volume is $0. Before postage, that is 19 cents a label on Shippo, 20 cents on ShippingEasy, and 30 cents on those two plans, a software gap rather than a postage gap.

Pirate Ship pros and cons

What we like

  • No monthly fee and no per-label software fee at any volume, and signup does not require a credit card.
  • Priority Mail Cubic and Connect eCommerce are included, and the cubic length cap is 22 inches after July 12, 2026.
  • Shopify import marks the order fulfilled and returns tracking, and the import batch is not capped.

What could be better

  • USPS and UPS only, so a FedEx or DHL Express parcel needs a second account.
  • Media Mail's listed maximum is 0%, and UPS Ground Saver publishes no discount percentage.
  • Help is chat and email, and there is no phone line.

Who Pirate Ship is for

Pirate Ship fits a US store that ships on USPS or UPS, from a handful of orders a week to a batch that fills the afternoon. Shopify is the path with the least typing, and a spreadsheet covers a marketplace export, whether orders live in the store or in a file. The fee does not step up when volume swings with the season.

Skip it when the carrier is the constraint: FedEx and DHL Express are not on the account, so an express catalog needs Shippo or another multi-carrier tool. Skip it when you print postage stamps, want a phone line, or need international carriers on day one. That job is Stamps.com, and the cheap plan's label cap will not hold a busy week. Skip it when the job is one queue for every channel plus inventory: that is ShipStation, the wider leaving list is the alternatives page, and pack checks are in the Ordoro review.

Under 25 shipments a month, ShippingEasy's free plan and Shippo's 30-label plan also cost nothing in software, and both add FedEx. A very small shop is choosing carriers rather than a fee, and Pirate Ship is the one that stays free after those caps. The free shipping software roundup lines the caps up, and the shipping software guide is the wider set. Toolradar data: ShipStation is the most cross-shopped name in this category, listed as an alternative to 40 other tools as of October 17, 2026.

The bottom line

Buy Pirate Ship when the parcel is USPS or UPS and you do not want a software subscription at any volume. The 2026 cost that moves is postage: the 8% temporary increase through January 17, 2027, signature confirmation, and Media Mail with no discount, which you should quote on its own.

Pay for something else when the missing piece is a carrier or a workflow. Shippo, at its Toolradar profile, is the FedEx and DHL Express option, and its free plan ends before the first paid band. Stamps.com, profiled at Stamps.com on Toolradar, is the stamp meter, and the cheap plan caps labels and stamps. ShipStation is the order queue when you need one list for every channel.

ShippingEasy, profiled at ShippingEasy on Toolradar, is the free starter that also lists FedEx, and it stops being free once volume leaves that starter. The order management guide is the next read if the queue, not the label, is the problem.

Frequently asked questions

Is Pirate Ship worth it in 2026?

Yes, if you ship with USPS or UPS and you would rather pay postage than a monthly label plan. Priority Mail's listed ceiling is 88% off retail, a maximum rather than a promise on the next carton, so quote the box if the margin is tight. It is the wrong account if you need FedEx, DHL Express, postage stamps, or a phone line. A Media Mail shop should compare postage itself, because that service has no discount and free software cannot create one.

How much does Pirate Ship cost?

The software costs nothing, with no monthly fee, no per-label fee, and no minimum, so the invoice you cannot avoid is postage. From April 26, 2026 through January 17, 2027, Ground Advantage, Priority Mail, Priority Mail Cubic, and Priority Mail Express are up 8%, and Media Mail is left out. Signature confirmation on a domestic USPS parcel is $4.15 and adult signature confirmation is $9.70, the add-ons when a parcel needs a name at the door. A wrong size over 70 pounds, or 130 inches in length plus girth, can draw a $200 fee, and that charge is a measurement error.

Is Pirate Ship really free?

The account is free, signup does not ask for a credit card, and there is no paid tier above it, so you cannot be moved onto a seat. Pirate Ship says the carriers pay for the software, and you still pay postage plus add-ons such as signature confirmation. Media Mail is listed with a 0% ceiling, so a book seller gets no markup and no discount. UPS Ground Saver does not publish a ceiling, so the quote you request is the only number you can budget.

Does Pirate Ship work with Shopify?

Yes, the Shopify app imports Unfulfilled orders, buys the label, marks the order Fulfilled, and sends tracking back, so Shopify matches the label without a second update. The app has to stay installed or new orders stop importing, and you can filter financial statuses so a refund never reaches the ship list. For Etsy, eBay, or another export, a spreadsheet takes CSV, ODS, XLS, and XLSX with no batch cap, so a marketplace file can become a full print run.

Is Pirate Ship cheaper than Stamps.com?

On the software line, yes at any volume, because Pirate Ship has no subscription and Stamps.com charges one every month. Stamps.com Basic allows 10 shipping labels and 25 stamps a month, so past that cap you are on Professional, which has unlimited labels. Pirate Ship does not cap labels and does not include a stamp allowance, so it will not replace a meter that also prints stamps. Stamps.com lists FedEx on every plan and adds phone support once you leave Basic, which is the reason to pay, not a lower postage ceiling.
