Best Shopify Alternatives in 2026
Eight platforms a store can move to instead of Shopify, with plan prices and the third-party gateway math at one sales volume, checked in October 2026.
BigCommerce is the closest hosted replacement if a third-party gateway is why you are leaving Shopify. At $40,000 a month in gross order value, Grow plus the 1% third-party fee is $505, and BigCommerce Scale is $423 when the gateway is embedded. WooCommerce suits a team that will host the store. Squarespace suits a design-led catalog without Shopify's app market.

- 8 tools compared: BigCommerce, WooCommerce, Squarespace, Square Online, Wix, Ecwid, Big Cartel, Adobe Commerce
- WooCommerce (best for: WordPress stores that will pay for hosting to drop the platform fee): Free plugin, no platform fee. Hosting is a separate monthly bill on top.
- Squarespace (best for: Design-led catalogs that can live without Shopify's app market): Basic from $19/mo billed yearly, with a 2% transaction fee. 14-day trial, no free plan.
- Square Online (best for: Shops that already take in-person payments on Square): Free per location. Plus is $49/mo per location, with a lower online card rate than the free plan.
Leaving Shopify is a margin decision, not a feature hunt. The Grow subscription is the small line on the invoice, and the third-party gateway fee is the charge that grows with every order you take outside Shopify Payments. Full checkout customization sits on Plus, which starts at $2,300 a month, so a store that needs its own checkout logic is choosing that plan or a platform that does not lock the feature there.
This page is for operators, DTC founders, and merchandisers who already run a store and are pricing a move. Our Shopify review covers the platform you would be leaving, and the cheaper Shopify alternatives piece prices a $10,000-a-month store, which answers a smaller-volume question than the one below. If the sticker price is the only pain, start there. If the gateway fee or the Plus wall is the pain, the totals on this page are the ones to use.

BigCommerce
The hosted swap when Stripe or PayPal is the gateway, because those orders skip the open-provider fee.
- Pricing
- Scale from $299/mo billed yearly after you pass Growth's sales cap. 15-day trial.
Best for: Hosted stores leaving over a gateway fee or the Plus checkout wall
Pros
- Stripe, PayPal, Adyen, Amazon Pay, and Klarna are on the embedded provider list, so those orders carry no BigCommerce platform fee
- A 15-day trial needs no credit card, while Shopify's trial is 3 days and then $1 a month for 3 months, so you can test before a card is on file
- Growth's open-provider fee matches Shopify Grow's third-party rate, and embedded orders skip it, so only listed gateways get the lower total
Cons
- Core caps trailing GMV at $30,000 and Growth at $100,000, so the scenario store is already on Scale and the Core tile is not the bill
- Performance starts at $1,499 a month billed annually, and the account moves there at $2,000,000 in trailing GMV, so Scale is not a forever price
WooCommerce
The free core on WordPress, with no platform fee, if you will pay for hosting and a build.
- Pricing
- Free plugin, no platform fee. Hosting is a separate monthly bill on top.
Best for: WordPress stores that will pay for hosting to drop the platform fee
Pros
- The core plugin has no monthly subscription and no revenue share, even when the gateway is not WooPayments, so the fee you are leaving does not return
- US card rate on WooPayments is 2.9% + 30¢, with a $15 dispute fee, and there is no extra platform percentage on top
- Product count is unlimited on the free core, with no sales cap pushing you onto a higher tier
Cons
- Woo's pricing page puts hosting at $25 to $350 a month for most stores, and the high end can erase the fee you left to escape
- Paid extensions are a separate yearly bill, so subscriptions or advanced shipping mean rebuilding what Shopify apps already covered
Squarespace
The design-led leave, once you are on Core, where the online store transaction fee drops to zero.
- Pricing
- Basic from $19/mo billed yearly, with a 2% transaction fee. 14-day trial, no free plan.
Best for: Design-led catalogs that can live without Shopify's app market
Pros
- Core, Plus, and Advanced charge a 0% online store transaction fee, so that percentage stays until you move off Basic
- Every site starts with a 14-day trial and no credit card, long enough to move a small catalog before you pay
- UPS and USPS shipping labels for orders inside the United States are included from Core up, and Basic does not include them
Cons
- There is no free plan, so the test store ends when the 14-day trial ends and you pay or you go offline
- Basic stacks a transaction fee on card rates, which repeats the Shopify Basic pattern you may be leaving
Square Online
The leave for a shop that already runs Square at the register and wants one catalog.
- Pricing
- Free per location. Plus is $49/mo per location, with a lower online card rate than the free plan.
Best for: Shops that already take in-person payments on Square
Pros
- The free plan has no monthly software fee per location and still includes an online site, which fits before volume justifies a software line
- Plus cuts the online card rate versus the free plan, which is why a busier shop pays for the software
- Plus and Premium each include a 30-day trial, and you can switch plans later
Cons
- Plus and Premium bill per location, so a second location is another monthly fee before you compare the total with Shopify
- Premium is $149 a month per location and keeps the same online card rate as Plus, so you pay for software, not a cheaper card rate
Wix
The leave when the website and a basic catalog should live in one editor, not an app stack.
- Pricing
- Core is $29.77/mo on a yearly plan, the first tier that lists basic ecommerce.
Best for: A marketing site and a small catalog in one editor
Pros
- Core is the first Wix plan that includes payments and basic ecommerce, so anything cheaper on the ladder is not a store
- US Wix Payments cards, excluding American Express, are 2.9% plus the flat per-card fee, and American Express is 3.7% + 30¢
- The first upgrade to a premium plan can be canceled within 14 days for a refund, which limits the cost of a wrong editor
Cons
- The free site does not include payments or ecommerce, so it cannot stand in for a store
- Business Elite is $159.77 a month on the yearly price for advanced ecommerce, far above Business at $39.77 a month, and the year is paid up front
Ecwid
The leave when the site stays where it is and only the catalog has to move.
- Pricing
- Starter is $5/mo for 10 products. Venture is $35/mo monthly for 100 products.
Best for: Adding a catalog to a site you already run
Pros
- Ecwid's pricing FAQ says there is no setup fee and no transaction fee on any plan, so the bill is the subscription, not a cut of the order
- The entry plan can be added to an existing website, which avoids a full replatform for a small catalog
- Venture raises the cap to 100 products and adds the app market, coupons, and a custom checkout
Cons
- Starter stops at 10 products, so an 11th product requires Venture and the entry price is only a sample
- Two staff accounts and a 2,500-product cap arrive on Business, at $65 a month on monthly billing
Big Cartel
The short plan list for a maker shop, with a Shopify product import on both paid plans.
- Pricing
- Platinum is $15/mo after a 7-day trial. Diamond is $30/mo. Gold is free and limited.
Best for: Maker shops that want a Shopify import and a short plan list
Pros
- Platinum and Diamond both import products from Shopify, Etsy, and Squarespace, so the catalog does not have to be retyped
- The paid plans include inventory tracking, discount codes, and shipping labels, which is the kit a tiny shop needs
- Platinum starts with 7 days free and you can cancel without a term, so the import can be tested before you are billed
Cons
- Abandoned cart recovery, scheduled drops, and advanced discount logic are Diamond-only, at $30 a month
- Gold is free and limited, so the comparison that matters is Platinum against Diamond, not the free tier
Adobe Commerce
The enterprise leave: open source is free, and the paid packages are quoted.
- Pricing
- Magento Open Source is free. Adobe Commerce paid packages publish no list price.
Best for: Enterprise catalogs with a developer and a quote
Pros
- Magento Open Source is a free ecommerce platform, so the license is not the bill and you still pay for hosting and staff
- Adobe sells Commerce as a cloud service, on dedicated cloud, and as Optimizer, each behind a pricing request
- The open-source edition can use the extension marketplace, which is how you add features you do not build
Cons
- The paid Adobe Commerce packages publish no list price, so they cannot sit next to Plus on a spreadsheet
- Open source still needs hosting and a developer, and neither one is inside the free license
What it is
A Shopify alternative is a commerce platform that runs the catalog, cart, and checkout in place of Shopify. Hosted plans charge a subscription and run the servers, while self-hosted plans charge for hosting and extensions, and the software fee can be zero.
The two exits are different, and pricing the wrong one makes the migration look cheaper than it is. One is a payment constraint: the processor is not Shopify Payments, so Grow adds its third-party percentage on top of the processor's own charge. The other is a product constraint: checkout customization is listed as limited on Basic, Grow, and Advanced, and full only on Plus. A store with neither problem usually spends less by staying than by rebuilding elsewhere.
BigCommerce and WooCommerce are the two exits that can take a mid-size catalog without turning the move into a website rebuild. The other six fit a narrower shop: a design-led catalog, a Square register, a site you already run, a maker's assortment, or an enterprise quote.
Why it matters
Toolradar data: Toolradar, the software directory we run, evaluated 108 ecommerce platforms for its ecommerce platform ranking. Shopify was the most compared platform on Toolradar over the last 90 days, with 411 side-by-side comparisons, as of October 17, 2026.
Operators run those comparisons because they are pricing a switch, and a wrong stay is the fee already on the invoice. On the scenario later in this page, Grow plus the third-party fee runs $82 a month more than BigCommerce Scale when the gateway is embedded, or $984 over a year, before redirects, apps, and customer accounts. The cost of a wrong leave is the reverse: if Shopify Payments is available, that gateway surcharge is off the invoice, and the hosted swap can cost more than staying.
We priced Shopify and these eight alternatives on each vendor's own pricing page on October 17, 2026. The ranking follows the reason for leaving, not the lowest sticker. BigCommerce is first because it is the hosted peer a mid-size catalog can move to without taking on servers. WooCommerce is second because it removes the platform fee for a team that will run hosting.
The other six are fit picks, and each card names the store that should skip it. Retailpresso does not run a test lab, so nothing here is a timed migration or a conversion test. How we compared: each price is the vendor's published price, next to the plan limit, with one sales volume worked out in public. How we rate pages is at our how we rate page.
Key features to look for
Pricing
Prices were read on October 17, 2026, on Shopify pricing, BigCommerce pricing, WooCommerce pricing, WooPayments fees, Squarespace pricing, Square pricing, Wix plans, Wix Payments fees, Ecwid pricing, Big Cartel pricing, Magento Open Source, and Adobe Commerce pricing.
The scenario is one store on Grow, billed monthly, that cannot use Shopify Payments, with $40,000 a month in gross order value. Grow's monthly plan is $105, and the third-party fee on that order value is $400, so the platform layer is $505 before the gateway's own card rate. Card processing is extra on every option, so it stays out of the comparison, and a lower platform bill can still lose to a worse card rate.
BigCommerce defines GMV as gross order value minus 10% when it sets plan thresholds, which on this store is $36,000. A year of that volume is far past Growth's $100,000 trailing cap, so the honest comparison is Scale, not the mid-tier price.
Scale includes $33,333 a month in GMV, the amount over that cap is $2,667, and at 0.9% the overage is $24. Scale's monthly plan is $399, so the bill is $423 when the gateway is embedded. Stripe, PayPal, and Adyen are on that list, and the gap versus Grow is $82 a month, or $984 a year, only while the processor stays on it.
The gap reverses if the gateway is off the embedded list. Scale's open-provider fee is 0.6% of eligible order GMV, which on the same reduced GMV is $216, so Scale then costs $639, or $134 more than staying on Grow. Upgrading to Advanced instead of leaving is also $639 at this volume, because the fee on the gross order value is $240 and that total does not beat staying.
If you can use Shopify Payments, drop the gateway surcharge and rerun the math, because this scenario no longer applies. Plan-by-plan Shopify numbers are in our Shopify pricing breakdown, and the WordPress side is in WooCommerce pricing.

Who it's for
Move to BigCommerce when the store is already hosted, the catalog is past a starter shop, and the processor is one BigCommerce lists as embedded. That path can beat Grow without asking the team to run servers. Move to WooCommerce when the team already runs WordPress and will own updates, because the platform fee goes away only if someone hosts the store. The Shopify vs WooCommerce comparison is the longer version of that split.
Choose a lighter platform only when the catalog matches it, not because the software line looks smaller. Squarespace from Core up is the design-led case, and Shopify vs Squarespace prices the plans against each other. Wix is the case where the marketing site and the shop are one project, covered in Shopify vs Wix. Square Online is the case where the register is already Square, which our Square POS review and POS ranking cover from the counter side.
Ecwid fits when the website stays and only the cart is added, which suits a small catalog and fails when the cart is the whole business. Big Cartel is the maker shop, and Adobe Commerce is the quote for a team that has outgrown Plus and has developers.
A store chasing the lowest total at a smaller sales level should use the cheaper-alternatives scenario instead. A store that wants a $0 software line, and will accept a free tier's limits, should read free ecommerce website options. The wider field, including Shopify, is in our ecommerce platform ranking.
The bottom line
BigCommerce Scale is the hosted number to beat when the gateway cannot be Shopify Payments. The gap versus Grow is $82 a month when the gateway is embedded, and that figure belongs next to the migration budget before anyone debates themes. WooCommerce is the better leave when you want the platform fee gone and you will pay for hosting. Squarespace, Wix, Square, Ecwid, and Big Cartel fit only the kind of shop they are built for.
Adobe Commerce is the leave for a team that needs a quote and a developer, not a tile price next to Plus. None of these totals include the cost of moving the catalog, so a cheaper subscription can still be the more expensive year. Read the BigCommerce review before you book that project, and keep Shopify's Toolradar profile as the baseline you are measuring against.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best Shopify alternative in 2026?
BigCommerce, for a hosted store that is leaving because it cannot use Shopify Payments. At $40,000 a month in gross order value, Grow plus the 1% third-party fee is $505, and BigCommerce Scale is $423 when the gateway is embedded. WooCommerce is the better alternative when you will host the store on WordPress and pay for hosting separately.
How much does it cost to leave Shopify for BigCommerce?
Embedded BigCommerce Scale comes in $82 a month under Grow once the third-party fee is included, which is $984 a year, and that is the platform gap only. Card processing is extra either way, and so is the rebuild of apps, redirects, and customer accounts. If the gateway is not on BigCommerce's embedded list, Scale's 0.6% open-provider fee can erase that gap.
Is WooCommerce cheaper than Shopify?
The plugin is free and there is no platform fee, so Grow's third-party charge does not exist on WooCommerce. Hosting, on WooCommerce's own pricing page, runs $25 to $350 a month for most stores, before extensions or a developer. It is cheaper on the platform fee, and it is not cheaper if the build is large.
Is there a free Shopify alternative?
Magento Open Source is free software, and you still pay for hosting and for someone to run it. WooCommerce's plugin is free on the same terms, with hosting as its own bill. Big Cartel Gold is a free limited plan, and Square's free plan has no monthly software fee but charges 3.3% plus the usual per-card cents, so the checkout is not free. Ecwid's cheapest plan is $5 a month for 10 products, which adds a catalog rather than replacing the storefront. Wix's free site does not list payments, and Squarespace has no free plan, only a 14-day trial.
Should I upgrade to Shopify Advanced instead of switching?
Not when the problem is a third-party gateway at the scenario volume. Advanced's monthly plan plus its lower third-party fee comes to $639 before the gateway's card rate, which is higher than Grow plus its gateway fee, so the upgrade does not fix the reason for leaving. Advanced fits when you want the lower Shopify Payments card rate or the 15 staff accounts, while full checkout customization stays on Plus.
When is Squarespace a better leave than BigCommerce?
When the store is design-led, the catalog does not need Shopify's app market, and you can sit on Core or above. Core's online store transaction fee is 0%, while Basic still charges a transaction fee that behaves like the Shopify plan you may be leaving. Basic billed yearly is $19 a month, which is the software line rather than the cost of taking a card. BigCommerce is the better leave when trailing sales will push you past a GMV cap or you need embedded gateways at Scale's volume.
What is the Shopify Plus alternative if I need checkout control?
Plus is the only Shopify plan that lists full checkout customization, and it starts at $2,300 a month. BigCommerce is the hosted alternative to price before that, with no platform fee on embedded gateways, so checkout control does not require the Plus contract. Magento Open Source is the free-software alternative if a developer will build checkout, and the paid Adobe Commerce packages publish no list price.
