TL;DR

Square Online is good for a small online store in 2026 if you already sell in person with Square or your online sales are modest, because the Free plan has no monthly fee and includes a website builder with SEO tools, pickup, local delivery and shipping. The cost sits in the card rate: 3.3% + 30¢ per online sale on Free, read on Square's online store plans page on 19 October 2026.

Square Plus costs $49 a month per location and lowers the online rate by 0.4 points, which pays for itself at about $12,250 a month in online card sales. A store that sells only online and plans to grow should also price Shopify Basic, which charges the same entry card rate as Square Plus for a lower monthly fee on yearly billing.

Square Online is the website and online store that comes with every Square account. It shares one item library, one inventory count and one payout with Square's point of sale, which is the reason to choose it. The trade-off is a higher online card rate on the Free plan than many guides still quote, and fewer store-design options than a dedicated e-commerce platform.

Toolradar data: Toolradar tracks 109 e-commerce platforms as of 19 October 2026, and the median cheapest paid plan among the 26 that publish a price is $47 a month, per its e-commerce platform ranking. Square Plus sits just above that median, while Square Free undercuts every paid plan on the monthly fee and recovers the difference per sale. Square's own profile is Square on Toolradar.

This review prices Free, Plus and Premium for a store selling $3,000 and $15,000 a month online, against Shopify, Squarespace and BigCommerce. Every price comes from the vendor's own page, read on 19 October 2026. Retailpresso runs no test store, so this is a pricing and features review, not a hands-on build.

What is Square Online?

Square Online is Square's website builder and online store. You build pages from layouts, add products from the Square item library, and sell with pickup, local delivery or shipping. Orders, inventory and customer profiles land in the same Square Dashboard as in-store sales, so a shop with a counter and a website runs one catalog.

Square sells it inside three account-wide plans rather than as a separate subscription: Square Free, Square Plus and Square Premium. The same plan sets your in-person rate, your online rate and which store features you get, and the paid plans are priced per location.

How Square Online works

You open a Square account, which starts on Free, then build the site from the Square Dashboard. A free square.site subdomain is available, and Square's help center says connecting a custom domain you own needs a paid domain service; Square also sells domains and Google Workspace email through the same setup.

Plus and Premium each come with a 30-day free trial. If you process more than $250,000 a year, Square invites you to ask for custom pricing and processing fees, so a larger store should negotiate before accepting the list rates.

Square Online key features

One catalog for store and websiteEssential
Items, inventory and customers are shared with Square POS, so a sale online reduces the same stock count as a sale at the counter. That is the main reason a Square seller picks Square Online over a separate platform.
Pickup, local delivery and shipping on FreeEssential
All three fulfillment modes are included on the Free plan, with ordering windows and minimum or maximum order amounts, and Square offers shipping label printing with discounted US rates.
Expanded customization, subscriptions and QR ordering on Plus
Plus adds expanded site customization, advanced item settings, bundles and subscriptions, and QR code ordering. A store selling subscriptions needs Plus regardless of its sales volume.
Real-time shipping rates on Premium
Carrier-calculated rates at checkout, based on weight and destination, are a Premium feature, alongside advanced reporting and 24/7 phone support.
Wallets and Afterpay at checkout
Checkout accepts Apple Pay, Google Pay, Square Pay, Cash App Afterpay and Cash App Pay. Afterpay costs the seller 6% + 30¢ per sale on every plan, roughly double the standard online rate.
Abandoned cart emails and product reviews
Abandoned cart reminders and automatic product review requests are listed among the store features, but not on every tier, so check the plan grid before counting on them.

Square Online pricing

Square lists three plans on Square's online store plans page. Free is $0 a month with online card payments at 3.3% + 30¢. Plus is $49 a month per location and Premium $149, both at the lower 2.9% + 30¢ online rate. Manual entry or card-on-file payments cost 3.5% + 15¢ on every plan, ACH invoice payments 1% with a $1 minimum, and Afterpay 6% + 30¢. Prices were read on 19 October 2026.

The break-even is simple: Plus saves 0.4% of online card sales, so its monthly fee pays off at about $12,250 a month in online sales, our arithmetic. Premium charges the same online rate as Plus, so it never pays for itself on online sales alone; buy it for real-time shipping rates, advanced reporting or 24/7 support.

Scenario one, $3,000 a month online across 60 orders: Square Free costs $117 in fees, Plus $154 including its fee, Shopify Basic $134 on yearly billing (its plan fee plus card fees at its entry rate), and Squarespace Basic $184, because its 2% online store transaction fee sits on top of card fees. Squarespace Core, with no transaction fee, comes to $134.

Scenario two, $15,000 a month across 300 orders: Free costs $585, Plus $574, Shopify Basic $554 and Squarespace Core $554. At this size Free is the most expensive option, and every paid plan wins. Methodology: list prices only, card fees at each vendor's published entry rate, before tax, totals our arithmetic. Competitor prices were read the same day on the Shopify, Squarespace and BigCommerce pricing pages.

Who Square Online is for

Buy Square Online if you already take payments in person with Square and want a website that sells from the same catalog, or if you are testing online sales below a few thousand dollars a month. The Free plan is a real store, not a trial, and our Square POS review covers the counter side of the same account.

Skip Free once online card sales pass that break-even level, because the 0.4-point rate gap then costs more than the Plus fee. Skip Square Online altogether if you sell only online and want a large app ecosystem or deep theme control: our Shopify alternatives and e-commerce platform ranking cover stores built for that, and the free e-commerce website guide compares other no-fee starts.

The bottom line

Square Online is a good free online store for Square sellers and a fair one for anyone under about $12,000 a month in online sales. Above that, Square Plus is the better Square plan, and Shopify Basic or Squarespace Core cost less again on yearly billing.

Premium only makes sense for carrier-calculated shipping, advanced reporting or round-the-clock phone support, since its online card rate matches Plus. Ask Square for custom pricing once you pass $250,000 a year.
