Best POS Systems for Small Retail Stores in 2026
How seven point-of-sale systems stack up for owner-run shops with one or two registers, with a full monthly bill worked out at $20,000 in card sales.
Square for Retail is the best POS for most small retail stores in 2026: the Free plan has no monthly fee, and Plus at $49 a month per location adds inventory tracking and purchase orders. Shopify POS wins when a real share of sales happens online, Clover suits owners who want the register hardware and software from one company, and Loyverse is the cheapest software for a very small shop. Every price was read on the vendor's own pricing page in October 2026.

- 7 tools compared: Square for Retail, Shopify POS, Clover, Lightspeed Retail, KORONA POS, Helcim, Loyverse
- Shopify POS (best for: Small stores that sell online as well and want the website and the counter to draw on the same products): POS Lite free with any Shopify plan; POS Pro $89/mo per location; Shopify Basic $39/mo or $29/mo yearly
- Clover (best for: Owners who want a countertop terminal and the software from one company, on one bill): Mini Essentials: $849 device plus $29.95/mo, or $75/mo for 36 months; in-person 2.5% + 10¢
- Lightspeed Retail (best for: Stores with large catalogs or many brands that buy on purchase orders every week): Basic $109/mo, Core $179/mo, Plus $339/mo ($89/$149/$289 billed yearly); 1 register included; in-person 2.6% + 10¢
For a small store, the POS software is rarely the expensive part. The card rate is. A shop with one register and a few staff pays its POS company every time a customer taps a card, and those fees outgrow any monthly subscription long before the business feels big.
So we ranked these seven for the owner-run shop: one location, one or two registers, a few thousand products at most, and an owner who does the buying, the counting and the closing. We weighed four things in order: total monthly cost at a realistic sales volume, stock tools a single buyer can run without a back office, how long the contract or hardware plan ties you in, and whether the system grows into a second register without a migration.
Retailpresso data: our model shop rings up 500 card sales a month at a $40 average ticket, $20,000 in total. The cheapest published setup in our scenario is Clover Essentials bought outright, at $579.95 a month plus $849 for the device; the dearest is Square Premium at $704. Square Free lands at $595, and every line of the math is laid out further down.

What it is
For a small retail store, a POS system is the register app, the card terminal and the back office that log every sale, take card payments and keeps stock counts current. Retail-ready systems add barcode scanning, low-stock alerts, purchase orders to suppliers, customer profiles and reports on what sells.
Why it matters
Most small-shop POS systems are also your card processor, so the rate on the contract belongs in any price comparison, even when the plan page buries it. Square, Shopify POS, Clover and Lightspeed each publish an in-person rate, so you can total them before you sign. KORONA lets you bring your own processor, Helcim charges interchange plus a margin, and Loyverse leaves payments to a partner, which means those three need a quote at your volume before any comparison is fair.
The second cost is time. An owner who reorders from a spreadsheet loses hours each week and still runs out of the items that sell. That is why we rank inventory tools above extra features like kitchen displays or appointment booking. Our roundup of POS systems across retail and hospitality covers the wider market.
Key features to look for
Pricing
Our small-store scenario: one location, one register, $20,000 a month in card sales at a $40 average ticket, or 500 sales. On Square Free the whole $595 is processing, at 2.6% plus 15 cents a sale. Plus totals $624: the plan fee and $575 in fees at 2.5%. Square Premium costs $704: its lower rate saves $20 against Plus, far less than the extra $100 in plan fee.
Clover Mini Essentials bought outright costs $579.95 a month ($29.95 plan plus $550 at 2.5% plus 10 cents), on top of the one-time device price; spread over three years that device adds about $24 a month. On Clover's 36-month payment plan the same shop pays $625. Shopify Basic billed monthly with POS Pro costs $698 at 2.6% plus 10 cents, or $609 with the free POS Lite. Lightspeed Basic billed monthly lands at $679 with the same per-sale rate as Shopify ($659 on yearly billing).
What this means: at this volume, the gap between the cheapest and dearest published setup is about $124 a month, and the stock tools you get for that money matter more than the gap. Square Plus costs $29 more than Free and adds the inventory and purchase orders most shops need. KORONA, Helcim and Loyverse do not publish a flat card rate, so we left them out of the totals rather than guess; get a written quote at your own volume. Square, Shopify and Lightspeed hardware costs extra in the scenario, while the Clover figures include the device.

Methodology: seven vendors, each read on its US pricing page in October 2026. For every tier we noted what a small shop gets (stock counts, supplier orders, returns, loyalty, commitment), ran the 500-sale scenario where a flat card rate exists, then ranked by fit for a one or two register store run by its owner. Nothing here comes from running the systems in a shop; every claim is read from vendor pages.

For a single small store, begin with Square for Retail: the Free plan costs nothing until you sell, and Plus adds the inventory and purchase orders most shops need for a modest fee. Choose Shopify POS if your website already earns real money, so one catalog serves both. Choose Clover Essentials if you want the terminal and software from one company and can buy the device outright. Lightspeed Retail fits larger catalogs, KORONA fits owners who want no contract and their own processor, Helcim fits steady card volume, and Loyverse is the free starting point for the smallest shops.
